| Post subject: | Removing the Crankshaft Pulley |
I noticed that there is not a bolt holding the pulley onto the crankshaft as I’m use to with other cars I’ve worked on. I’ve search the forums for how to remove the pulley but a lot of them call it a harmonic balancer and seem to suggest that there is a bolt holding it on. These posts usual involve later model cars with power options and/or AC while mine is a ’65 with no options…just an alternator and water pump sharing the belt. Is there a difference between mine and these later model cars or am I misunderstanding the other post? I’m assuming my pulley can be removed with a puller but I want to be sure before I invest in a puller kit. |

Yes, just use a puller. A lot of slants came with no bolt but you can put one in if you want to (I forgot what size and thread). Richard |

That's crazy that it doesn't have some kind of bolt to hold it on. It seems like once it comes off, it won't stay on as dependably as before. I guess that it can be carefully hammered back on? |

Do Not hammer it back on as you will/may damage the thrust bearing. Richard |

Be sure to use the correct type of puller, one that bolts to the hub of the damper. Do Not use a "jaw type" puller that grabs onto the outer ring of the damper. Use a threaded stud & nut to re-install the unit. DD

Thanks for the tips on getting the pulley off. What is the best way of putting it back on without cause damage to the crank? |

Use a long bolt and washer as Doc said or http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g1023 Richard |

Yes, you need a puller to remove the "balancer"- & you should have a installer to refit it (the balancer is a slight interference/ press fit onto the crank) Most never had a center bolt & were fine, but if you want one it's a 3/4" fine thread bolt & a large/thick washer- I don't remember how long. you also have to clean the dirt out of the crank snout & threads. The slant 6 has a pulley groove on the outside of the harmonic balancer. Many /6 had additional pulleys that bolted to the front or back of the balancer for additional belts - such as P/S or A/C. |

If it has the outer power steering pulley you will need to unbolt it off the balancer first so you have some easy 'clean' bolt holes to use with your puller...The only thing to add to this is that if working on a late or industrial engine the balancer may be a single peice with 3 grooves in it.. -D.Idiot |
