Post subject:  A-body 8-3/4 option came on what???

A buddy and I were discussing A-body rear ends. I currently have a 8-1/4 which I had added an Auburn Posi to. I think it's plenty strong for my 400-450 hp 340 but that's not the main target of this discussion.
We were wondering what A-bodies would have had a factory 8-3/4 installed? I was thinking maybe a Formula-S Barracuda, Duster Sport or the 69 440 Barracuda.
I know the A-body 8-3/4s are pretty rare. Perhaps they were only optioned as a special order?
Just curious. I know Dan has his info right off the top of his head LOL.
Thanks for helping.

Post subject:  You could get these...

These would be standard in the following cars:

Big Block Dart and Barracudas 1967-1969 (383/440/Hemi)
340 Dart/Barracuda/Duster/Demon (67-69 in the Barracuda,68-72
on the others)

You could also option the car to have it as the heavy duty axle
from the dealership when ordered, there are some other options
that would have included it as part of the package (police car
comes to mind...)

As you might imagine warranty claims on early 235HP 4 speed cars with the 7 1/4 were off the charts. First the 7 1/4 was beefed up some but that was not enough so in 1966 the 8 3/4 was adapted to the A body and came standard on all 235HP 4 speed cars after some date. I believe that even into the 67 model year that 235HP automatics still were standard with the 7 1/4. If you ordered the right options, sure grip, etc you could get an 8 3/4 with automatic. All 67 383s and other big blocks as well as all 340s had 8 3/4 through the 72 model year when the 8 1/4 was introduced. My first 8 3/4 A body came out of a 1966 cuda.

There were a lot of them under 318 Darts too. They are not that rare.

Hell, I probably threw away a dozen of them back in the late '70's early '80's stripping cars out.

If the right box was checked when the car was ordered you could find them behind slants too.

I take a quick look under every A-body vehicle I see at the wrecking yard... the "no rear cover" 8 3/4 are easy to spot.

I tend to find most of them in 70-72 318 vehicles.
The sad thing these days... you never see an A-body vehicle in a wrecking yard.

My 8 3/4 came with a Sure-Grip out of a wrecked 69 Dart with a 340 and four speed. It has 10" rear drum brakes and backing plates stock.

I love this rear end for it's strength. I went though (4) 7.25" rear ends in 8 years driving to Everett Boeing and back along the foothills, 120 + mile daily round trip. The last 6 years making the same drive with the 8 3/4 has been uneventful. It will four wheel drift effortlessly and is nice and quiet.

The A bodies here at Pullapart are always "mysteriously" missing 8 3/4's and front disc brakes!
