| Post subject: | Bracket Engine Build |
I'm a slant six newbie looking to build a bracket race combination in a 72 Dart Swinger. Already have a Clifford Intake, Hooker Headers, Holley 390 carb and a Carter AFB #4294S off a 4bbl 273. I'm not looking to make it fast just consistant in the 15sec range or so. Short block is good so i'm no touching the rotating assembly. Would like to get the compression in the 9.5 to 10.5 range want to keep it on premium pump gas. Do i just cut the head or a combination of the head and block and how much? I know the heads can be cut quite a bit but don't know if making the chambers so small is a good idea or not. Also looking to see what camshaft would be best, this car will be used mostly on the track and maybe an occasional street driver. Not sure what direction to go with the transmission, it has the 904 but do i go with the low gear set like we do with the small blocks? What kind of converter should a run & how much stall? What rear gear ratio would be best? I have a set of 3.55, 4.10 & 4.56's. I've had great success running small blocks in bracket racing but never tried a slant, want to see if it's possible to make a killer slow bracket car. Just not sure what works and doesn't work on the engines, looking for some direction from those that know. |
