| Post subject: | First Post Help Identify Engine |
I am getting ready to build out my engine and I need some help. I was told that it was a 1983 engine but from what I can find online it appears to be a 68-74 slant six. ![]() Can anyone help me? Also since I am getting ready to build it out any suggestions on moderate performance upgrades? I have pulled everything and cleaned it. |

Welcome to the board jhdeval. Is the car you are working on a ’65 Cuda? Don’t be shy, tell us about your car. That block looks to be 1968-70 casting. Perhaps it was rebuilt in ‘83 and someone got the story turned around to be a 1983 engine. This [url=http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=66]page[/url] will help identifying other parts on you car. There are endless builds for these engines, you need to figure out what the car is going to be used for daily driver to race car, and what you would like it to do differently in its current state. There are engine builds that can be found using “Search†function, a red button on home page “Articlesâ€, and stickies at the head of each topic such as “Engines†that contain a great deal of information which may help you map a build. |

Wja jr I am new to this board but I have been on fabo for a while but thank yiu. It is a 65 barracuda with a slant in it. The block has a crack in the water jacket to the outside on the engine. I am replacing it with the block in the picture. I use it as a daily driver but I want something with a bit more oompf and I know the slant can do it. I would like aomething that I wont be afraid to pop off the line. |

Don't junk the old block it can be saved by drilling and taping and inserting plugs using overlaping holes. Richard |

There is no problem using the block with the earlier engines parts. The crankshaft register on the '74 BH block is a different size, so the early crank should be used, or get an appropriate bushing to reduce the size of the register to allow the use of the early transmission. Doc sometimes has those bushings, so contact him here. CJ |

Welcome to the site. Since the car is going to be a street driver, and the engine is already apart, the first thing I would recommend, after rings and bearings, would be a compression increase to 8.5-1 to 10-1 (by actual measurement) depending on how radical a cam you would want, and whether the grade of gas is a consideration. |

I generally use mid grade gas I seem to get the best bang for my buck with it in the current engine. What are the methods to increase the compression? Also I stupidly went ahead an bought bearings based on the idea this was an 83 engine and I have seen through the parts sites that there are 2 different numbers for 75-83 and 68-74. Can I use these bearings or do I need to get the early bearings. I bought crankshaft, connecting rod and camshaft. |

Cam shaft bearings should be OK.Crankshaft and Connecting rod bearings are only good between crankshaft manufacture types and can't be swapped (unless you have lots of time and a machine shop at your disposal just to say you did it). 1960-1976 Forged Crank 1976-1987 Cast Crank (mains and rod bearings are skinnier-i.e. about an 1" wide vs. the forged crank where they are much wider...) -D.Idiot |

Normally you wouldn't buy bearings until you measure the crank journals and determine if it needs a regrind or not. |

Well that is information I did not previously have. What are the tolerance measurements for the crank and then I assume the bearings after torquing down the caps? |
