Can the A-904 transmission be fitted with an aftermarket "shift kit" to make the upshifts more firm?...I'm not a big fan of the way they slide out of one gear and slip into the next....I'm looking for a nice and firm, but not harsh, upshift....can anyone hook me up?...this will be a 225 engine with the Super Six parts and a mostly stock rebuild for street use. |

You can do anything to a slant 904 that works on the LA-904...(If you have to go the very cheap route you can even use the Mopar Action Ehrenberg tricks, and even drill the plate as shown in Frank Adkin's Chrysler Performance Book). Be advised that some slant six 904 components could use an upgrade (i.e. the stock spot welded bands...) as they may not work well with firmer shifts...) -D.Idiot |

The 727 in my van has had 9 springs removed from a plate that normally has 12. All the exra springs were to keep the shift soft. It shifts firm, no shift kit and has a $100 cheapy 2200 stall. Over 100K on it so far. And yes I am running type F fluid. |

That sounds interesting...looks like I need to do some research on this. |

Yes, any shiftkit for the correct year trans will fit. See the post "shift kit is it worth it" |

Yep, by deleting the springs it got rid of some slippage. I assisted the guy when he rebuilt it. I didn't have a clue what he was doing. Check at the local trans supply store for a factory style high stall. I think mine is a Dacco. |

904 trans does not have the 9, 11, or 13 small return springs on the front (high and reverse) clutch, just the 727. The 904 has one large coil spring. |

There are several kits available. Most of the lower cost kits will firm up your shifts from 1st to 2nd but you may not notice much of a difference between 2nd and 3rd. One of the cheapest kits is nothing more than a new valve body plate that is exactly the same as the stock plate with one of the openings being squared out larger and one of the ball checks removed. If you can get hold of a new kit plate, you can mark your old plate and just hone it out to size. Then remove the one ball check and your good to go. 904 is a great tranny and properly built will withstand any slantsix application. The one I had built went from 3 to 4 planetary gears, extra plates and had the servo bore lined with a steele insert which makes up for the metal lost from the aluminum casing during normal wear and reduces binding of the servo piston. At any rate, for you application, a cheap kit will get you some results you will most likely appreciate. Good luck. |
