Post subject:  starting a rebuilt engine for the first time

Hi Guys,

We hope to have the rebuilt engine in our Toad soon and want to hear your best recommendations on how to proceed with the break in. Mark, aka, Madmax gave me his experience and thoughts. 1. fill oil filter until saturated 2. pour all but the last quart of oil in the pan 3. pour last quart over the rocker arm assembly 4. pack oil pump with Vasaline to create vacuum 5. crank engine until desired pressure 6. run engine at 1500 to 2000 rpm for cam break-in until engine is warm 7. let engine "rest" over night and re-torque head..... repeat two or more times. Mark also treats his head gasket with WD40 before assembly. Thanks for your help.

Regards,
John Brayton

Post subject:  Other thoughts...

New engine takes 1 more quart to fill than the normal oil change since the engine has no oil film on the internal parts yet, so FYI. If you have a camshaft from a manufacturer follow their recommendation for break in (most ask for 20 minutes of 2000+ rpm, varying the rpm back and forth for the last 10 minutes), some like comp cam asks to use a break in lube additive (the guys in the know here call it the 'secret sauce').

Using WD depends on the head gasket...I would not use it on a permatex gasket as it defeats the gasket's self sealing characteristics (once they are heated on break in and seal....they will destruct on head removal...so they are good once installed correctly), I stopped using felpro and didn't have problems using a dry Victor Reinz on a 12:1 motor....
