Post subject:  Putting Engine Back Together...Any Tips?

My slant is finally really to be reassembled. I bought a nice rebuild kit that included pistons, all bearings, seals and gaskets. I honed the cylinders to .40 over due to some scratching from broken rings. Also, all measurements have been done and everything looks good. I’ve played with engines most of my life but this has been the most involving. Obviously putting these engines back together is fairly easy, but are there any details that are often overlooked that cause issues later? Any suggestions for assembly oil?

Hi nagosnell.
I would suggest that you read the threads in the link Best of Doctor Dodge, from the FAQ in the 'engine' section. They contain a wealth of details about things to remember when you're putting a slantsix together again.

One suggestion for a lube that doesn't run off but stay where it's applied, until the engine is started: http://www.lubriplate.com/Products/Auto ... rease.aspx

Make sure camshaft bearings are square in the bores.
Install cam shaft then drop in lifters.
Spin cam shaft ,make sure all lifters spin in their bores.
If re-using old lifters and cam make sure they all go back into the original bores.

If new cam-shaft follow the correct break in procedure.

Take your time.
there is heaps of info around on the net.
Make a step by step list before you start .You will be surprised how long that list can get.
Have fun.
