This happens when you come out of park, preparing to drive, right? "sometimes it engages and other times it won't" meaning the gear you selected, drive or reverse, doesn't engage, leaving you in neutral?? Do the push buttons feel normal when you press them when the gear does not engage. The Factory Service Manuals have descriptions for adjusting both cables at the tranny end. Your pushbutton control unit might want a good cleaning and lube. I don't know what car we're talking about, but the manual for my 64ragtop has instructions for removing the pushbutton assembly. I can't imagine trying to do the needed maintenance on my 49 year old dart without the proper manual. I hope that's some help. ATB BC |

Before you tear into that push-button assembly I'd look at the end of the cable where it enters the trans and make sure the retaining clip isn't moving on the end of the cable. Mine was and the car would get stuck in reverse and such. A little bending of the clip and all was well. |

I poked around today and the buttons and linkage were sticking .Like the knucklehead I am ,used bearing grease to lube them when I put dash and all back.Sprayed some penetrating lube and worked it in,even shot some down the cable .Works like a champ. Thanks for the info guys.Guess I will have to curb my bright ideas and do some research.Bright ideas dont work with a dim bulb. |
