Are the transmissions for Slant's universal or do some years only match up with certain engine years?

I'm in need of replacing my Slant and want to make sure I buy another engine that will match up with my current transmission.

Also, how do I identify my current transmission so I know what to year engine to match it up with?

I know these might be common questions. But I'm in need of basic info as I move forward.

Thanks in advance

Crank pilot changed in 1968. So automatic transmissions/torque converters after that can only be used with cranks made in 68 or later. Early transmissions can be used with later crank by using the later flexplate and a bushing to take up the difference in diameter. There are internal differences in the transmissions that make swapping torque converters impossible.

There are other transmission differences that have to do with the car - cable shifted vs. rod shifted, parking brake vs. no parking brake, tailshaft length, driveshaft flange vs. slip yoke.

manual transmissions are a whole 'nother topic.
