Hey all..

Got the electronic ignition fired up in the slantillac.. Duster Idiot's recurve on the distributor appears to be a nice upgrade, since I'm getting a bit more power.. Still have a stumble in the lower end, so I'll be doing Trailbeast's HEI upgrade tomorrow.. Eliminate the ECU, Ballast Resistor, and old coil as potential causes of the stumble.. With the timing light on it, I'm watching the timing jump around (sometimes up, sometimes down.. about 5-8 degrees, maybe).. And, I see the distributor rocking back and forth.. It never did THAT before :) Not sure what the deal is on that.. Wondering if there's a distributor cap gasket I'm missing or something? The distributor slid into place a little roughly, but the shaft is pretty tight as per DI's reconditioning.. not sure what else would cause it to have that rocking motion.. Wish I'd have taken some video of it before it got dark-- otherwise I'd show you guys..

The 170/1bbl is still underwhelming at speed, so I think I'll nab the 225/904 a friend has.. All cylinders have good compression (130-135), unlike the 170 (which was low.. around 80-90 in cylinder 1.. didn't check the others..)

Anyway, any thoughts on what I might be looking at in terms of the timing lines jumping around?

The distributor should not be rocking back and forth.

Things to check:

1) Distributor is seated properly (all the way down and solid).
2) There should be a donut gasket between the adjuster plate and the block...
3) Adjuster plate bolt is tight on the bottom of the distributor, not just at the block?
4) Top end: Rotor is seated all the way in the slot.
5) Cap is properly seated (if you can rock the cap back and forth it needs to be readjusted, what brand did you use?)

If you checked the timing jumping around with a dial back light, did you check the rpm at which this was happening?

To my knowledge, the distributor is seated in.. I've got it bolted down as far as the bolt will go..

Donut gasket was reused from the points distributor..

Adjuster plate is similarly bolted flat..

I believe the rotor was seated correctly.. I pushed it on there solidly.. The tab on top did get a little bit tweaked since my recurved distributor's snap-prongs are stuck in the "cap locked in place" angle..

Cap is a Standard/Blue Streak CH-410 (not the CH-410X as that has been discontinued as a part number)..

Worst case scenario is I can bust it out of there one more time.. The distributor and cap and rotor have been in and out at least 10 times over the past few weeks.. What's one more time? :)

THe good news is that TDC is achieved.. It's now marked clearly, hurray!

The timing is jumping around at idle, but clears up (when driving, anyway) as it comes up to speed.. Haven't hooked up the tach yet..

Thanks a ton, DI.. I appreciate all your help so far.. We'll get this slant running right :)

Raj

All recurves get tech support, I'm kind of concerned about the bouncing timing at idle, the distributor machine didn't show this at idle speeds...

Does this happen with the vac. advance disconnected?

Did the points distributor bounce? Have you checked timing chain slack?

Vacuum advance was plugged (though, I need newer vacuum hose.. currently its what was on the car-- plastic tubing between two short sections of vacuum hose)..

Not sure if it had this issue with points-- never timed it before I yanked the points..

I'm going to send another distributor tomorrow that is a bit 'looser' on tolerances. If it's not your timing chain, then we'll know after you swap this one in...send me back the other one and I'll dissect it.

I haven't had a chance to do much with the car other than parking space surf this week..

I'm going to be swapping in a '67 vintage 225 with pertronix on it this weekend.. I'd like to get the better curved dizzy in the car, but I'm going to have to wait for the weekend after that to spend the time on it.. So, no hurries.. The 170 shoooould be going to Steve "Pishta" from here and FABO, so it should be worth investigating what's causing the issue.. I know I'm certainly interested to see what she has on the inside in terms of cylinder wear, etc.. 90psi compression in cylinder 1 isn't good..

The 225, by comparison, was a firebreather.. I'll eventually be swapping on the 2bbl marine intake, slant six linkage, and most likely a Weber (new carb vs finding a good core, etc.. plus, neighbor is a Porsche guy and likes tuning Webers..).. But, so far the whole prospect of swapping a slant intake sort of scares me.. Reading the details on swapping one on here and.. yeah.. Gotta wait til summer for that, I think :)

Thanks, DI.. If you need, I can paypal you to cover the new dizzy coming out..

Raj
