Post subject:  Ooops wrong camshaft.

Hi slant sickos.
I received my new camshaft today for my "stock" 225 rebuild.(old cam was cactus.)
This is for a 1963 AP5 valiant with 904 for daily driver use.
The engine has extractors and a carter single barrel carb .
Unfortunately it appears I was sent the wrong camshaft.
Now before I spit the dummy and send it back ,to get the one I asked for,I would like some advice if I could please.

The camshaft specs for cam A. (the one I asked for )are as follows.

INLET Adv dur =272* . @ .050" = 198* lobe c/line =107* lift=.405" lash=.010.

EXHAUST. Adv dur =260*. @ .050"=202* lobe c/line =111* lift =.414" lash .020.
Described as:
Basic RPM 600-4000. strong idle
Suit standard carb up to 350cfm,no spring change required but recommended.Auto or manual. No hi stall required.Suite all fuels ,perfect for LPG.
Inlet lob lif @TDC .029.

The Specs for Camshaft B (the one I received)
INLET Adv dur =287*.@.050"=230* lobe cline100* lift .456" lash .015"

EXHAUST. Adv dur=287*. @.050=230* lobecline=110* lift=.456 " lash .015"
Described as:
Requires 350-600 cfm with extractors.spring change required.Hi stall converter around 2500 rpm.Suites PUL and AVgas.
Dial in at push rod .065" @TDC on inlet v or .060" on ex.
Mild idle.

OK.My main focus for the build is fuel economy. But the gear head in me can t help himself and wants a bit more grunt!
I will be adding the electronic ignition soon after the vehicle is on the road. An edelbrock 500cfm carby and manifold to suite, is also on the list as the single barrel on there now, needs to go back on to another project(no hurry).
I noticed the No1 exhaust valve guide is very worn along with the rocker arm tip.

So I need to take the head to the machine shop to get the guide fixed anyway, and I was thinkin , maybe I could get a bit taken off the head .
After I re- build the bottom end ,with the hotter camshaft in. Measure for CR .cc head and calculate for:
9.5 compression using 98 RON fuel.(about 82 in US terms?) may be the target.
I have new dual valve springs already.

I did not measure for compression before dis assembly (rookie mistake)cause this was going to be a pull apart and change cam job only
All other parts ,bearings ,are in very good condition ,it appears that the engine was a reconditioned unit that the camshaft was not run in properly on.

So guys I guess I want somebody to talk me into keeping the "street /strip cam. Camshaft B.

A couple of Q`s

1. Can I get reasonable economy from this set up.(1 barrel now ,edelbrock later. extractors ,electronc ig, 9.5 CR and camshaft B) country town driving.
I dont have overlap figures.

2.If I was to run the stock converter do you think it will be a dog from the standing start.

3.If I get a 2500 stall converter will this hurt economy around town ?

4. Why couldnt they just send me the cam I asked for?

All thoughts welcome.
Brendan

Thanks in advance

As we know... "more cam" = more rpm = more high rpm HP.
More cam does not usually mean better MPG... especially if it moves the power band / operating RPM range higher.

Find the intake valve closing point and calculate the DCR numbers for both cams, doing that will tell you alot.

For the best results, get the correct cam for your engine / vehicle operation needs.

The supplier. Nice guys, easy to deal with.
I just dont know how they can give me this cam after I said "give me the one closest to stock" & " the most mild one you got".
any way ,no drama. I plan on building a street /strip motor in the future so i may use this cam for that.

Doc.
All good points you make. Its just a PITA as I wanted to start the re build this weekend.
I think I can get a stock used cam for next to nothing, that might be the way to go now.
