I worked for a company that had their Dodge Vans serviced by ScAamco in town on a service contract....

One day the oil lamp came on in my Van (5.2L Magnum)...Owner said he'd pay me to just change it in the lot, I pulled the pan plug and nothing came out...I told the owner to tow it to a reputable shop in town...48 hours later I stopped by to see what they had found out...the had the oil pan out and on the bench....the oil had never really been changed it turned into the paraffin 'jello' to kill engines with, only the indentation where the pick up was allowed anything to freely circulate back to the pickup and pump... (2 weeks later another van took the same tank, then another van with a 5.9L...oddly the one with the 3.9 never had the problem...)

Carbureted vehicles contaminate the oil more than EFI equipped ones in general. With a modern car and oil 5000 mile oil changes are no problem. With synthetic oil and a good filter 10k miles is easy. If the fuel and ignition sytems on your slant aren't in top shape then stay with 3k mile oil changes.

Manufacturer suggested maintenance schedule for my '07 Dodge Caliber has oil change at 6k interval, 5k for my wife's '05 Mazda Tribute. I think Joshua Skinner has the right of it though for our old slants.
