Post subject:  Transmission Fluid Question

This is the only ATF+4 I can find in town (Walmart).
Is one brand better than another?
Should I wait until I go into the Big City and buy some other brand?

I recomend Dexron II/III or ford type "F" for older non lock-up transmissions. I'm not very fond of ATF+ fluids for older high mileage trans. The high detergents can loosen sediment collecting in the valve body.

Isn't that a good thing? Then the filter and magnet catch the loosened sediments and all is well.

Rebuilt engine and (soon to be) transmission, and I ain't fancy enough to have a magnet(or a drain plug for that matter!)

Much like cleaning out an old engine it might loosen something that won't get caught by the filter or the magnet, and or loosen something that was helping seal a slow leak causing another issue...then he has issue creep with the tranny, when he could have just topped up and drove until it really needed an over haul...

Oddly, E-berg in his articles uses Super tech oil and tranny fluid (Type F) usually... for tranny tweaks and the other stuff for new overhauled trannies.

Oh wait a minnute...forget the tranny fluid, just replace the whole thing with a 4 speed and clutch...no fluid change needed!

Yeah,Right!!!

I was reffering to sediment that's fine enough to pass through the filter, but settle in the valve body, like this:

This VB came from Rick covalt's blue car. It was working fine, but he removed it so I could perform my own shift kit mods.

I see that same sediment in every trans I have ever opened up, regardless of make, model, or fluid being used.

Me too, I just squint a little and it goes away :D

As far as the ATF+4 goes, I don't worry about brand, I actually believe any brand sold as such* needs to meet a stringent spec and in this case, that's good enough for me. (*I mean those labelled as ATF+4, not the "fits all cars" type that says "meets or exceeds " in the fine print.)

EDIT: I have yet to read it all but ATF+4 info and license list are here:

Super Tech is on the list.
