Post subject:  63 Valiant AP5 from New Zealand

I first came across this site a couple of weeks ago. I bought a 63 Valiant just after xmas as I wanted a project to keep me occupied since I recently sold my business to be a full-time stay home dad.
I have had old Falcons in the past but never anything Mopar.
Over here in NZ, old Falcons hold much greater value, so instead of buying a basket-case Ford, for the same sort of money I was able to afford this car, which is a 2 owner car, done 96,000 miles, has been stored in a garage for the past 15 years, has had quite a bit of work done in recent years to get it ready for getting back on the road, but just needed someone to give it some love and finish it off.

Main problems initially were it running hot, and it wont idle once it comes off the auto-choke. Thats when I found this site. Heaps of good info on here, particularly about the Holley 1920, so with any luck next week I will have it running ok and go to try and get it road-legal. Have been concentrating all my efforts so far on the engine, the body is in original paint and has very little rust, so I plan on leaving that for now.

I cant work out how to post pictures here, so I will put a link to some facebook ones. Hopefully you can see it.

Yours looks great. I had a crack at loading stuff on photobucket last night, but either the site had a problem or it was me

I like the rear screen louvre on yours, I would dearly love to get an exterior fron screen visor for mine, havent looked seriously for one yet, but parts seem thin on the ground over on this side of the ditch.

Hopefully I will have the pictures sorted in the next few days

A great day today!

When I purchased this car a couple of months ago, the guy said it had 2 problems, it ran too hot, and it wouldnt idle when it was hot. He said it had had a new carburettor fitted too. The over heating was a combination of things that ultimately was easily sorted. But since I have had it running again I havent been able to get it idling hot. It runs the Holley 1920, and I have had it off, in bits, blown it out with compressed air and carb cleaner, rekitted it and checked every adjustment on it, no difference. Checked and rechecked valve lash, timing, and basically eliminated every other thing.
Last week I found a guy selling a Carter off his old Valiant (same model as mine). Bolted it on this morning and the car is instantly fixed. Runs and idles like a dream. Went for a family cruise in it this afternoon and it was smiles all round. I can only assume there must be something fundamentally wrong with the Holley on it, I wonder if it has had the idle misture screw wound in too far at some point and its done some damage to the idle system or the body of the carb. Guess I will never know.

Anyways, I love my car a lot now.

A very common cause of poor idle after the engine is warmed up is that the valve lash is too tight. Adjust the lash and see if the idle gets better.
