We are running an Edelbrock 600 Performer series carb on my sons Dart. We are getting ready to start tuning it. If anyone is running this carb with a similar built engine, I would greatly appreciate knowing what setup you arrived running. I would rather not re-invent the wheel if you know what I mean. It is obviously running rich at the moment. We just bolted it on and went.

Engine .030 over 225, .528/ 284 cam, big valve head, Offenhauser intake and 6 into 1 header.

Sorry for the delay - been out of town.

What tells you that it's running rich??

I actually found that my Edel 600 ran a little lean out of the box on my '64 motor, which has almost identical build specs to yours. The air velocity is lower through the venturis so jet up a little to account for that. It's been awhile, but I think I ended up with around 0.101" jets in the secondaries and 0.095" or 0.098" in the primaries with 70/47 or 70/42 rods. In general, pretty much every carb I've used on my Slants have needed jetting up to account for the lower air velocity - everything aftermarket is calibrated for V8s, and almost always for the SB 350 in particular.

We have been very busy too. No Problem.

Just looking at the exhaust tips, they are totally black? Actually have not pulled the plugs but plan to this week. I'll post what they look like and maybe that will help with a diagnosis.

Can you explain a little more why the carb would be lean if they are normally set up for the SB V-8?? Thanks for all you help.

I think if you idle an engine with that kind of cam below 1500, you will get some richness no matter what (unless you use MP-EFI maybe? - we'll see). That could cause your black tips. This problem is worse with a cold engine too. I have jetted my carbs for best mileage and power, and still get some blackness on the tips and richness at idle - the nature of the long-duration beast.

If the thing is really belching smoke at idle (or otherwise) when the engine is warm, then there may be another problem.

FYI, I got my best 1/4 times with the Edel 600 (14.30s), but I never got a chance to try the 500 or the TBI on the strip with 3.91 gears. Ran some 14.70s with the TBI and 3.23s, which is about equivalent to the 600.

The air velocity through the venturis is what draws fuel into the carb throat when the accel pump is finished working. With the smaller displacement of the Slant, the velocity will be substantially lower than a V8 and will draw less fuel. I do not have a more detailed understanding than this, but at least you have to make your pump shot fatter (or bigger jets) to get no bogs when applying the throttle. I did not see huge differences in overall power when rejetting, but did see it in bog reduction on the street. You may want to try the stock stuff with maybe a few rod/spring changes before you pop the top off to change jets.

just a thought, when you mentioned rods and SPRINGS. Sometimes the rods can bounce around with a big cam. Trying the other springs, can maybe 'calm' them down. Take the little covers off and watch the step up rods. It has been along time, but I believe it was the stiffer springs that worked on this guy I know's Hemi.
