Post subject:  What's involved in putting bigger valves in?

I want to put Ford 302 valves in my head, but I don't really know how to do it...
Do I have to do machine work? Are they direct fit? Do I have to cut the stems? etc.

I put Ford 300 valves in a slant head about 12 years ago. They are the biggest sized valves you can physically put in the head without enlarging the combustion chamber. Still, there is probably some shrouding going on since the valves are literally wall to wall in the chamber.

If I remember correctly, the valves had to be shortened, new grooves for the keepers had to be cut, the valve stems had to be turned down slightly, and new valve guides had to be machined into the head.

Much easier and cheaper would be to use the enginebuilder valves available on eBay. It has been a few years since I built a performance head for slant, so my knowledge may be out of date.

Not to hijack this thread, i am also looking at bigger valves. I was thinking about getting the engnbldr valves off ebay. Does the head need any modification to run those or are they just small enough to basically drop in?

Anytime you install new valves it involves having the seats cut, and if your head is a pre-1973 you might have some recession due to non hardened seats. All of this will require machine work unless you have a buddy with the set up to do it. Also if your guides aren't new you might also think about having them replaced as well.

That is what i thought, just wanted to make sure. I have to take the head to the shop anyway so i was going to have the valve seats done and get it shaved and so on anyway.
