| Post subject: | petronics ignition |
hi all this is my first post. i have a 68 dodge sportsman van with a fresh 225 slant six. i recently tried to cure a vapor lock problem and in the process i purchased a petronics ignition. i tried installing it and fried my coil. i replaced the coil and put in new points and condenser and left the electronic ignition out. i want to know if any of you have put one in and can help me figure out how to wire it in accordance to the pesky ballast resistor. also i want to get a split manifold so i can side pipe the van (hehe) that also would be helpful. and one more question is an off. intake for a two barrel a good manifold to get to up grade from one to two barrel. thanks in advanced |

I believe the Petronix requires a full 12v. This was why you fried the coil if you followed the petronix wiring. The coil is not meant to see 12v that is the purpose of the ballast resistor. Just get a 12v coil and reinstall the petronix. You can bypass the resistor as it is not needed. |

| Post subject: | Ballast? |
I have heard that not running a ballast resistor will burn out the Ignitor. The way I wired mine up, I simply put it in in place of the points, and wired the red wire to the positive side of the ignition coil, the black wire to the negative side. Haven't had a problem with it. |

The Pertronix wiring diagram calls for connecting the Pertronix red wire before the ballast resistor so that it gets 12 volts and the black wire to the neg. terminal on the coil. In the stock setup, the coil receives its power through the ballast resistor which lowers the voltage. As I understand it, connecting the Pertronix directly to the coil is supposed to eventually fry the Pertronix since it isn't receiving a full 12 volts. That being said, I have had my Pertronix connected directly to the coil for about 3 months now and it hasn't burned up yet. I had heard differing opinions on how to wire it up and went with what was easiest at the time. I've been meaning to bypass the ballast resistor but just haven't (Read lazy). Matt - How long have you run your Pertronix wired to the coil? |

| Post subject: | And 2 BBl with Dual Exhaust.... |
Welcome to the forum, Here is some info on my "Dutra Duals" cast iron exhaust manifolds. http://www.dutra.org/doug/doug-sl6-exha ... xhaust.htm (Copy-paste full address into you browser As for a 2 BBl set-up, a factory "Super Six" is a good option for you. Stay tuned, we are working on a Super Six "how to" article for the articles archives, should be done in a couple of weeks. DD [/url] |

I put the crane XR700 points conversion kit on my slant six, it works great, uses optical eye for pickup. The crane kit uses the ballast reisitor. |

Dartnick, the Pertronix Ignitor has been wired up that way for about 4 years, although it's probably seen less than a year total of driving. It was my daily driver when I was home from college, but now it's a full time project car. What I remember from the instructions was that they said the reduced voltage would not damage the Ignitor, but it could lower performance. |

| Post subject: | Pertronix Use |
I, too converted to a pertronix 3 years ago on my 63GT,wiring it directly to the coil with no modifications in wiring or changing orginal ballast resistor, using Mallory Promaster coil in day-to-day driving have not had any problems. Unlike a friend who had one fail on him with the condition of hard start and high speed miss-reinstalled points cured his problem. |
