I have an intermittent front transmission leak. It will pour fluid out of the front seal area at times then not leak a drop for a couple hundred miles. It is still full when not leaking so it is not the fluid level causing the leak. When its leaking it will dump 3 qts in just a few miles. When it starts leaking I park the car for a few days, top her off and it wont leak for a week then it comes back. The guy I bought the car from says it has a new front seal and he has taken it to several transmission shops and they were never able to fix the problem. I've never had a transmission do this, either they leak or they don't. I asked a few transmission shops and the standard answer is needs a rebuild. I think that means they don't know and are hoping a rebuild cures it. I will rebuild it myself if thats what it needs I just think thats the answer.

The vent is not clogged and I'm using type F fluid.

Im thinking a front pump problem. I have not messed with a TF tranny and don't want to pull it for something stupid. The transmission works great otherwise and is low mileage. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have exsausted my Google skills and still can't find a diffenitive answer.

Type F is the wrong fluid.

I suspect the front pump bushing is badly worn and that the seal has been damaged. For the front pump bushing and seal to live a long and happy life the crankshaft and transmission case have to be concentric (aligned). To check the transmission case alignment the transmission must have most of it's guts removed and be bolted to the engine. The procedure is similar to aligning a manual transmission bellhousing. You also need to check the torque converter hub to make sure it is undamaged. You could have a cracked hub.

One more thing. If you have a '68+ crankshaft and a '67 or earlier transmission you need a bushing in the back of the crank to properly support the nose of the torque converter.

That was going to be my question, What year engine and what year trans?
Also possible the converter has a crack in the pump drive. used to be a common problem, not so much any more, but I would check it carefully.

If I remember the vent is on the pump in the bell housing- is there any possibility something is causing sporatic overheating? I'd look first at the pump bushing & seal as others suggested, but something to think about if you don't find a problem.
