Are you asking about a cam button? Something to keep the cam from moving forward, or is it something else?

A cam button can be a good idea if the engine will see high rpm. If you do a search, you will find some great info here for making an inexpensive cam button. I've got years of racing seeing 5000 rpm regularly, and haven't had a problem. Folks that tach them up to 6000 or higher regularly put them on to keep the cam where it belongs. It can also be useful for off road vehicles that are used in extreme conditions.

For a daily driver that won't see high rpm, you can install one, but it isn't generally necessary.

CJ,

Just what is a cam button; where is its placement, and would you have a photo of one?

Here's one type.

Doc has some info about making one from an old rocker adjuster. A quick search will find it.

This is just cheap insurance on the daily driver if the timing chain stretches a bit and the cam walk forward and causes a problem with
the oil pump gear (especially if it's not an OEM pump/gear)...The price and time to do it outweighs the 'what if' factor on the daily driver that might see lots of miles.
