Post subject:  rear main seal

Recently bought a rebuilt motor. The timing cover and oil pan weren't sealed. Im curious to know if it's possible to check if the rear main was sealed or not, without removing the crank. If I upload a picture of it, is it possible to tell just by looking? [/list]

The first thing to look for are the ends of the "L" seals, sticking out onto the oil pan rails. If you do not see rubber "L" seal ends then the engine will leak and it's a "big red flag" that the engine builder does not know how to correctly assemble a SL6.

The next step requires pulling-off the main seal cap.
Once removed, look at the type of seal used, a "rope seal" or a rubber, 2-piece. If a rubber 2-piece was used, then inspect to see if the flat face is pointed to the inside of the engine & the sloped surface faces outwards.

Look at the point where the block meets the seal peice you can see the end of the "L" part of the seal.
