We have an MSD 6AL. This gives us a built-in rev limiter. Nothing against Mallory. I've used their stuff for years too.

Post subject:  mallory vs msd

Well the reason I ask is right on the mallory box it says "Direct replacment for competitors 6A box and improves" blablabla
And it is cheaper by $40ish. But if the fanfare says msd is the way to go so be it. Only reason I'm even moving to one is so I can have a clean tach signal for the EFI ecm.

Yet another vote for MSD,
My 6A Box is so old that the techs at MSD wanted it for their History disply case! ( I sent it in for a check-up, it was fine but they "up-graded" it anyway, to keep up with todays electronics)
I think I bought it in 1978 but to be honest, it's been so long I don't remember
It has always worked well.

I think you made the right decision. I was impressed when I looked up close at a few NASCAR cars and saw that they had off-the-shelf MSD ignitions. It also works great in my EFI conversion and will support the MSD-BTM to be used with my soon to be running turbo.

Another ignition ECU to consider is the Crane HI-6. It is equivalent to MSDs Digital-6, which is an upgrade from the MSD 6-AL. They are selling right now with Cranes LX-92 coil for the same price as the MSD 6-AL, around $200. Both the Crane HI-6 and the MSD Digital-6 are digital, where the MSD 6-AL is analog. The digital is supposed to be more durable. The Crane has an adjustable rev limiter, the MSD 6 has chips that are sold seperately in increments of 200 RPM. The MSD Digital, around $270 without coil, has a dual stage adjustable rev limiter, this is for drag racers, the Crane is only a single stage.
The Mallory HyFire VI-A is also digital, priced around $25 less than Crane but doesn't have a rev control.
MSD is the standard in NASCAR, but that may be do to it's the required ignition system. It may be a mandate that helps equalize the competition, so we can see another boring race like the 2003 Daytona 500. Of course, MSD may be used because if it ain't broke, why fix it! There's a NASCAR Official in my local Mopar Club, next cruize nite he comes to, I'll find out.

Post subject:  hmm, so many choices

Nothing is easy these days anymore, is it?

About rev limiters... Would it be wise to have one on a street car that might sometimes see some stoplight racing action? This is on an engine whos only internal modification is being bored out 30 over

If a MSD6 from 1978 is special, I wonder what a MSD5 from the same period is?
