Post subject:  more fuel pump questions

Does anyone know if the mechanical pump runs off the cam or is there a rod inside the motor that's involved? Is there anything special to installing it? It seems like mine is not working correctly (even though it's new) so I will get a pressure gauge to test it. Since my car was sitting for many years, I'm wondering if something inside the motor could be stuck which would not allow the pump to be working properly. Could the cam be worn? How about a picture of inside the engine? Please help !!! :(

there is a fuel pump eccentric ground onto the cam to drive the pump lever. no pushrods or anything else driving the pump. i've never heard of the eccentric going "round" but i guess it's possible.

A few things to look at.

It is, in theory, possible to wipe out the fuel pump lobe. I doubt it. Easy enough to check by pulling the fuel pump and taking a peek into the hole.

Another thing to try, pull the distributor cap. Good bet if the fuel pump isn't goin' up-n-down, the distributor won't be goin' round-n-round. If that's the case, you have timing chain problems.

If the lobe looks good and the distributor is moving, I'd check out the fuel lines. Could be a plugged or broken line. Use your lawn mower gas can to either suck gas out of, or pump gas into.

Hope this helps,
