I replaced my distributor yesterday, can't seem to get my timing right? When it does crank and the timing mark is after top dead center. Any ideas why that would happen.....before replacement it was Before TDC. Now it doesn't want to run or get the timing mark back to TDC? :(

You might have put the distributor back in with the rotor a tooth off from where it was. How much did the timing change in total? Are you rotating the distributor as far advanced as the adjustment will let you, and the timing is still retarded?

Keep in mind that the gear on the bottom of the distributor has teeth that are angled, so as you slide it in, the rotor will spin. If you don't want to go through the hassle of finding TDC again and you know about how far off you are, you could try this:

1. Remove the distributor cap, checking the position of the rotor. You may even want to make a mark on the side of the dizzy where the rotor is pointing.
2. Pull the distributor out slightly until the gear at the bottom is disengaged. You'll notice the rotor turning slightly as the dizzy comes out; I forget which way, but I think it will be counter-clockwise coming out.
3. Turn the rotor slightly clockwise to advance the timing. I believe the dizzy gear has 13 teeth, so 1 tooth will be just a little less than 30 degrees.
4. Slide the dizzy back in. The rotor will turn back in the opposite direction from before as the gear meshes back in (clockwise, I think). Hopefully the rotor is now pointing at a position slightly more clockwise from where it was before you removed it.

Thanks SpaceFrank I will give it a try......when you say as far advance is that clockwise advance and not counterclockwise, right? Thanks again......

With the distributor installed and the hold-down bolt loose in the slot, you want to turn the distributor body counter-clockwise to advance the timing. The rotor turns clockwise, so you're rotating the stationary contacts to be hit earlier.

I seriously hope I'm not having a brain fart and getting this backwards. I'm 99% sure, though.

SpaceFrank I'll try that asap and see about getting it going I'm about as far counter-clockwise as I can go though.....might have a little left I adjusted the opposite to get more movement but have to get back to TDC and align the harmonic balance.........thanks again.....
