my 75 valiant sat for years before i got it. i now have it up and running, am still going through various systems and fluids to freshen it up.

i have never been a transmission man. i'm getting conflicting advice on how best to proceed. i will say, so far the transmission seems to be in great shape. i am inclined to do a straight transmission service (i.e. new fluid, filter) and add some transmission conditioner. what do the experts recommend for a 63,000 mile survivor that sat a spell? particularly, any specific fluid recommendations, how much (drain converter?), etc.

What Fopar said!! That crap swells the seals and gaskets.
It might slow or stop a small leak, but you'll need all new seals and gaskets

Change fluid, change filter, adjust bands, drive it. If problems appear, fix accordingly.

The common opinion around here seems to be that the latest ATF+ or Dexron will work fine. Don't use Type F.

A related question for people who know more than I do: Am I correct in assuming that fully synthetic Dexron VI is fine to use? That's what I've been running in my Dart. Aside from a leaky shift cable, I haven't noticed any problems during a race.

ATF+3 or +4, Dexron, or F will work fine, from all my experience. I've never noticed a difference running any of them. Dexron will be cheapest and is what is generally recommended for these trannys.

Personally, if the fluid looks mostly red and doesn't smell burnt, I wouldn't even crack the pan open or do a thing to it. That always runs the risk of screwing something up that is working just fine. If you are planning to race or tow, then do the band adjust and filter/fluid service.
