Ok, I got the valiant running and took it for a ride, I was pinging a little so I went to regard the timing a few degrees. It was at the limit of the adjustment slot so I pull the distributor to move it a tooth. Four hours of screwing with it later it its running again pinging is gone but it gets very hot very fast. What did I so wrong? What should the initial timing be on my 67 valiant? It seems as if the advance comes in as soon as it starts reving up.

I'm frustrated

There is a second adjustment bolt on the bottom of the distributor so loosen that to get the needed travel.
This is where a 7/16 distributor wrench is the "tool to have".

I loosen the bottom bolt, & tighten the top bolt, while it is centered in it's slot, then set the timing using the bottom slot, then lock-down the bottom bolt.
Now I have fine adjustment, in both directions, when loosening the top bolt only.
