Has anyone had the points in a distributor melt the bumper that the cam rubs to open and close the points??

Has anyone had the points in a distributor melt the bumper that the cam rubs to open and close the points??

I've had it happen to me. Points ign, key left on, points closed. Arm heated up and melted the rubbing block, contact points were burned, the metal part of the arm got hot enough to loose its temper and become very easy to bend. |

I installed a MSD Blaster 2 coil to replace my old Chyrsler coil, any problems with this being done? I used the ballast resistor that came with the MSD coil or should I keep my old resistor? |

Use the MSD resistor in place of the stock unit. Put the stock resistor in your glove box. |

Ok Ted, thanks for that info. So I just wire the new ballast resistor in place of my old one on the fire wall using the same connectors on the new resistor connected like the old resistor was connected? Also how about a 7 mm plug wire. Is it ok to use from coil to distributor or do I need an 8 mm wire? |

Correct! Sure the 7mm will be fine, especially if they are spiral wound. Chrysler spiral wound were called MSW .....magnetic suppression wires years ago. That is what I am running, only in 8mm. They have a fiberglass carbon fiber core with a stainless steel wire spiral wrap. They are probably 7mm with a super thick blue silicone jacket. By the way, can't you find better points with a Bakelite cam follower? They don't melt!

What is the Bakelite follower? That is definitely what I need after breaking down a mile from home this afternoon......LOL only to see the points not moving when my wife turned the motor over so I could see if it was firing........  http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp ... fragment-1 |

Instead of your nylon plastic cam follower, Bluestreak and others make a bakealite version, no plastic to melt. Heck, I used to polish the bakelight with a little piece 400 grit and a little oil then the grease. They would last forever and the point gap would not change. I have a 440 that still uses points! Bluestreak brand only! |

Got to NAPA and ask for a set of Bluestreak. Accel used to be built that way too! I was just their last week and looked at a set when I was ordering a MO-3000 rotor for the Bluestreak cap. If you can't find a NAPA Auto Parts store, Rock Auto has them....call first. |

No, those are nice looking, but use black plastic. Bakelite are made from a compressed woven material and reddish brown in color. SL6 Dan has posted links in the past.... |

That fist set of copper ones you sent may last longer than the white nylon sets. They could have put a little black graphite in the plastic to help them last longer.... You need to read the specs.....on how they were built. |
