sometimes when my car heats up it wont crank again till its cool. i believe this is due to one of the components of the choke and idle. it is a single barrel carb and the timing is very inconsistent. |

That is normal and is known as heat soak. The exhaust manifold bolted to the intake manifold heats up the carb and boils the fuel causing vapor locking, hard starting, etc.... Take a look at the pictures of mine by clicking on the red link below. I made an inexpensive heat shield which helps a lot. I am in the process of building a much larger one......The electric fans also help to cool everything down after shut off so hot starts are not a problem and in fact are imediate.... |

beautiful! it seems you have already been exactly where i am headed. i appreciate the advice. what is the shield made of, and did it have an affect on the carb seal? |

It is a prototype made from a aluminum sheet stock just to see if it would help. That one came from the K&S rack at the local hobby shop. Quote: did it have an affect on the carb seal?
No, it did not. I put the stock gasket below the plate and another one above. I did have to get longer carb studs. I use Permatex MotoSeal #1, item #29132, gray motor cycle head gasket sealer. It is much better than normal silicone type sealers. It works great on the thermostat changes too!

right on. i had wondered about the studs. i was hoping that replacing the choke thermostat and maybe a check over the choke vacuum piston would remedy the situation. it also seems to happen when idle is set on the high side; i guess because of heat.? |

Heat may play a factor but the sloppy timing has more to do with it... |

I found out that my car actually does something similar, it runs rough until it has been driven for a little while. It only does it when I hold the accelerator down poart way as per start up instructions. I quit holding the accelerator down part way, crank it and tap the accelerator after it is running to smooth it out. Just my 2 cents |

i found slow air leak in the fuel line and got rid of it. this has seemed to help with vapor lock problem. but now i know that the carb is leaking just not sure where. it seems that it might be the middle gasket. got choke pretty much good even though the thermostat has a broken wire coming off of it. my speed idle cam seems to work alright. |
