| Post subject: | 1979 LU trans ? |
Going to go look at a A904 trans this weekend. The old timer who has it told me it was out of a 1979 "Dart" with a slant six. I think he meant an Aspen. The input shaft has a smooth spot on the first 3/4 of an inch so I know it's LU. Is there such thing as a LU 904? Wouldn't this be a 998 or 999? If it's low mileage and comes with TC is $100 fair money ? |

Starting in the late 70's you could get a Lockup 904. $100 for a core is about the junkyard running rate for these now (so $100 for a good plug and play is really a deal). The other way to tell if LU, is you can pull the valve body and see if it has the 's' tube for the lock up circuit. I have seen some late 904's that the part number stamped on the pan rail coded to a lockup, but the valve body and convertor were not... Good luck. -D.Idiot |

Seems like it is a low milegage unit that this guy removed many many years ago from a car that got t boned, he put it under his bench and there it has sat. It has the bare spot on the input shaft for the first 3/4" and the TC has a small round blue tag that says " HS lock- up ". So it seems legit. I will get part numbers off it tomorrow. I had to stuff it in the garage before the rains came in... |

That number stamped on the pan rail is the part number for a 1979 Lockup 904...what's inside could be different... -D.Idiot |

so the only way to identify it is to make sure it has the "s" tube inside of it ? cause it has the "correct" input shaft to be a lock up. |

If the unit looks good & you want to use it, I'd look for a procedure to shim or tweak the LU control valve. Those early LU were completely mechanical (no electonic solenoids) & usually engaged about 30mph or so- which can cause driveabilty problems, esp cold. Raising the engage mph to 35-40 helps alot. |

The early lockup transmissions, especially 79, were notorious for having torque converter premature lockup and shudder. Chrysler even went so far as to issue a kit to fix the problem. The kit consisted entirely of one spring that got swapped out on the valve body. On my brother's 83 van I was doing some diagnosing of what i thought might be a lockup shudder and I made a spaced that fit into the lockup spring tube on the valve body that completely disabled the lockup function. I would also pull the pan and valve body and make sure that there is a part throttle kickdown assembly. The last 79 904 I rebuilt did not have the PTK. |

See, I knew reading this forum would prove helpful! My 78 727 LU could do with raising the LU speed. Even behind a B block it still lugs in around town driving. I did have a shudder but a fluid change solved that. It really helps the fuel economy on the highway though, and around town I just got used to driving in second. |
