Does it leak after the motor is shut off? If so, that is a good sign that the bushing in the front pump is worn. It lets the converter drain back into the pan.

I just replaced the transmission (727) in my 1985 slant powered d150. It works great except the gear selector shaft drips. After all this work the last thing I want to do is pull the pan off again. Can this seal be replaced in the truck without removing the pan ? And also where is a good place to buy the seal ? Thanks D150 |

Any trans. shop will have this seal, it is also in all the rebuild kits. The seal can be replaced from the top but getting the old one out is a real challenge with the valve body still in the trans. (The seal is pressed-in real tight) Swallow hard and drop the pan / valve body, doing it the "right way" saves time in the long run. DD |

Thanks for the help. I will try to get a seal tomorrow. dropping the pan and doing it the right way sounds like a good Ideal. Yes it does leak when I shut it off but only when the fluid level is full. When it is 1 pint low it does not leak. When I bought this transmission I thought I was buying an original (not rebuilt) transmission. But when I replaced the front seal I noticed that the front pump was painted with that paint that looks like bare unrusted cast iron. If the bushing in the front pump is worn how long do you think my transmission will last ? The old transmission in my truck was a rebuilt unit the previous owner had installed. It only had 15,000 miles on it and sounded like it would shift four times. It would shift into third at 25 mph then at 35 it felt like a band was releasing. I changed it because I knew it wouldn't last long that way. Happy Motoring D150 |

there is a special tool that pulls the seal without dropping the pan. But on my dart you still have to drop the trans mount to get enough room to work. Takes as long either way. |

I had a 904 in my Duster that leaked from the day I bought it to the day I took it out. In the 3 years between those times, it leaked a puddle the size of a Volkswagon about 3 times a week but lasted 40,000 miles and about 700 passes at the track.
