Post subject:  Help mounting Accelerator

Today I was mocking up the accelerator pedal installation and something is not right. This is the pedal I have and if I bring it to the be mounted on the firewall it sits WAY WAY to deep. I am thinking it needs about 3-4 inches from the firewall so when at rest it sits next to the gas pedal. I have also attached a picture of the firewall space. The large open hole is where the old accelerator mounted to.

So anyone have any suggestions?

Was the cable hooked up and adjusted when you test fit it? There's a spring in the pedal assembly itself that holds it in the "pedal to the metal" position. The pedal has to be propped up by something underneath it or by cable tension to keep it in the idle position.

Pierre not sure I understand. The pedal free floats on the mounting bracket. As for test fitting I simply held it up in position and rocked the pedal to both the rest and full acceleration. I found with the pedal at rest and against the firewall it sat pretty far back.

I think if you need a little more room at the firewall, getting a piece of 16 gauge (.063 wall) square tube steel might provide the distance you need, you can drill it and attach the pedal to it, then bolt it to the firewall, in the bigger cars a piece of hat channel would work as well...

Could be worse, when I did demo derby one of our drivers was too short and we had to bolt 4x4 blocks to his pedals so he could reach them even the stock seat as forward as it went ('72 Torino...LOL).

I was kinda thinking the box tubing as well. How will that affect the accelerator cable?

That will make it a little shorter in effective length in the engine bay, but stock 1 barrel cables are longer than the super six cable by a few inches....if doing something like a large 2 or 4 barrel carb, you can snag a K-car cable out of the junkyard as they are about 24", so you can reroute the cable whatever you are doing.

NM... I just wanted to make sure you didn't think the pedal rest position was the same cable attached or not.

Was this original to the car or from something else? If it's off that much ....

I got it from Duster Idiot about a month or two ago. I believe it is out of a late model a-body. It is not out of an early but I am bound and determined to make it happen. Mostly I have to make it happen.

I installed a suspended pedal assembly from a '79 Aspen in my '64 Valiant and it fit fine. You must have the pedal in the wrong position when checking the fit.

I have a 75 pedal in my 65. It required some reshaping to fit....and is still a little funky. I suspect some care in making a spacer would make it satisfactory.

Could you take a pic or two?
