Do the bolts that hold the converter to the flex plate need some sort of locking washer? I just spent several hours tracing down a clanking noise and it turned out to be loose torque convert bolts.

Never seen them on any mopar install (727/904), I suspect red threadlocker would be appropriate at this point (certainly works on clutch plate bolts and holds up to that kind of shock).

I used some 12-point ARP torque converter bolts with Blue thread locker and it has worked great!

Were the two locating dowels put in the block when it was mated to the transmission?

Maybe so they wouldn't get lost during rebuild? Who knows. Bolts alone aren't good enough to align the trans to the block - if they are off a few thousandths then that could cause the torque converter bolts to chronically loosen up over time. Been there, done that.

Next to the top starter bolt, within an inch or so - that hole should have a dowel pin in it. Use a punch or small drill bit and see how far it goes in. The second is on the passenger side next to the bottom most bolt (or was it second to the bottom most?)
