Post subject:  Leaky Rear

I have a 7 ¼ rear end on my 63 valiant. I am eventually planning on upgrading the rear end, but right now I need to fix the leak in the one I have.

I originally thought that it was the rear seal. I replaced this, but still have a leak. I Re-torqued the bolt for the cover and still had the leak. I was thinking that maybe there was a tightening sequence to follow to get the seal to seal properly.

Last night I was looking at it to figure out what to do next. The oil is dripping from under the cover, but I also have oil collecting more towards the front.

So, I’m thinking it might be coming from the pinion seal. How do I go about changing this seal. The service manual says that you need a special tool to get the right depth.

Is there anything I need to watch out for while doing this? It appears that could be a simple thing. Does any one have a tried and true procedure?

Thanks,

John Killin

I had the same problem with mine, and it turned out to be the passenger side axle tube actually separating from the housing. The oil traveled all over the housing, but it was coming from the joint where the tube enters the housing.

You might check that, and check for loose ubolts too, as the problems seem to go hand in hand.

First, search old threads for more info.
Yes, it's relatively easy to replace. Drop the driveshaft. Hold onto the companion flange with a big-a$$ pipe wrench and break the pinion nut loose. Remove pinion nut, conical washer, and flange(yoke). Pop out old seal with a big screw driver. Clean out the bore real good, grease the inner part of the lip seal of the new seal real good, goop up the sealing area of the OD of the seal with sealer. Tap into place with a hammer. Grease up the ground sealing surface of the old yoke, and slide it back on the splines of the pinion. Replace washer and nut, tighten snugly. Then grab the outside of the yoke with the pipe wrench and begin to torque the nut. Stop occasionally, and rotate pinion back and forth a few times to make sure the bearing rollers are aligned properly. Tighten the bejesus out of it or to spec which ever comes first!

I picked up a new seal.

I'll be wrestling with this in the next couple of days. I’ve never done this before, so I’m going at it blind. I have a couple of questions about Bud’s post.

When I am “greasing up the seal,” can I use wheel baring grease, or do I need something else?

Also, as far as applying sealer, what do I use for this?

Thanks a lot,

Well the leak is fixed.

The pinion seal was a bit of a challenge, but now that I have done it wouldn’t be that hard to do again.

I put new fluid in on Monday and put a fresh piece of cardboard underneath to check for leaks. Not a drop.

I was surprised at just how little fluid went in.

I’ll have to check the level after a few trips around the block.

Thanks for the help,

John Killin
