Post subject:  A833OD Shifter

I have a couple questions regarding shifters used behind A833OD transmissions. Did the inland shifters and hurst shifters use the same rods? And was the hurst shifter unit used on the trucks the same as the ones used on cars? I have one of each and everything is so worn and sloppy it's hard to tell if they're compatible. I have an A833OD I want to put in place of my 3 speed in a 79 Aspen. Nobody lists rods for F-bodies, so I may have to repair the ones I have - curious that the swivels for 1-2 and 3-4 are left hand thread. The rods from the truck shifter are right hand threads. Any comments?

Rods should be pretty similar between the two shifters, by 1975 Mopar only used the Hurst Shifter and it was the same for cars and trucks...F-bodies use the short tailshaft A-833OD also found in the A-body, so you will need rods from a late A-body to complete installation in your car. (I used to run a 1978 A-833OD I got from a Volare.

On another note you will have to compare your driveshaft yoke between the two, the early A-body trannies used the A-833/A-727 yoke, and the late F-body versions would sometimes have the A-230(3speed)/A-904 yoke.

OK, thanks for the reply. I think I'll get a rebuild kit for the Hurst truck shifter and some new swivels and bushings. I want to test drive the trans before I put a lot of money in the project. I think the A833 OD has about 100k on it, so it should be OK with me just taking a peek inside for now. I have 3.23's and 205/14 tires, so it should work well.

Custom-

I am having the same problem with my '86 Ram and it's A833 gearshift. Sloppy as all get out. Where did you find a rebuild kit? Any info would be extremely helpful.

The reverse rod for a truck may be different. I think that is what are in my Duster.

Thanks DI for the Brewers link, that looks like what I need. Rug_Trucker - the truck rods I have are all shorter than the F-body rods, because the truck tranny has the long tailshaft and the shifter mount is closer to the front of the main case. Brewers also have this interesting piece: http://www.brewersperformance.com/products.asp?cat=50
The three speed shift handle(inland) that I have now has a similar mount, the chrome is good on it and it's the correct shape to clear the bench seat. If I have to chrome the truck stick, buy the rebuild kit and new clamps to mount it, I'll be out $300.00 anyway.

$175 would get you a new Hurst pistol grip lever from Gunslinger. I forgot which one works for the A body.

BTW Don at Brewer's is good to deal with. I bought some NOS BBD kits from him.

Edit: I am sure you can find out about a pistol grip for the F body too!
