My 73 dodge dart custom with the 225 slant 6 has obtained a very bad knock. The car is an automatic and it knocks all the time but it gets really bad if you give it some gas or if its in first gear. I know for sure it's nothing to do with the rocker arms or the push rods. Does anyone know of anything that it could be? Or anything the motors are known for? Also the car only has 66,106 original miles on it.

Give us some info about the car. 66K original miles is very little, but much of it's condition depends upon how it was used. To the corner store and back? Or did it see much highway/freeway driving?

When's the last time you changed the oil? Have you looked at the oil: is it sludgy, or are there any metal particles in it?

STOP running the engine and giving it gas to try and 'figure out' what the source of the knock is: that almost always results in more damage to what needs repair. Stop driving the car until you know why it's knocking. A knock in my 225 developed when I spun a connecting rod bearing driving on the freeway at 75mph, which sparked an entire engine rebuild. But my engine had 170K+ miles on it: far less than yours.

Is your oil pressure reading normal, or is the oil pressure light coming on?

Give us more to go on.

Jack the car up and put on jack stands, just the front end. then at the front of the bell housing remove the metal shield. You are going to check to see if your torque converter bolts are tight, there are 4 of them.

And the lugs those bolts are connected to are still welded to the torque converter.......... (3 of 4 broken welds on a 78 Cadillac.... (can be rewelded from under car))

Do check the converter bolts and lugs...

When I get a vehicle with a bad engine knock... the first thing I do is remove and cut-open the oil filter.

You have a bearing problem... you find bearing metal in the the oil filter.
If the filter is clean & clear... you spent $4.00 on an oil filter, that likely needed changing anyway.

I have accessed torque converter bolts by removing the starter, rolled engine over by fan belt & fan.

Sounds like the noise my wagon was making a while ago.
I checked my torque convertor bolts and 2 of them were loose.
Tightened them up and no more noise.
Hope you have the same luck.
