I got the engine in today. What a f'ing bear that was. It kept wanting to lean forward and rest on the transmission. I finally got it in place but one of the locating pins on the engine is stuck on the inside of the opening to the transmission. I don't want to lift the engine if I can avoid it so any suggestions?

Wrecking bar. Use it to pry the engine and trans apart.

so is the engine attached to the motor mounts? is the engine supported underneath at all? I used a modified floor jack like a transmission jack, and a sissor jack under the engine to align to two before connecting them together.

The engine is resting on the motor mounts in there proper location. The transmission is being supported by a floor jack and 2x4 to try and level it.

I think getting the engine and tranny close and using the prybar, crow bar, big honkin' screwdriver is gonna be the trick at this point.

You may need some help , wrangling the block while working the tranny to get things wobbled into place.

Almost there.

Thats exactly what I am trying to D.Idiot. 1 of my bolt holes is really close on the passenger side I am trying to get it lined up so I can get a LONG bolt in so I have room to move fore and aft but left right will be pivoted on that bolt.

if the engine is just mounted to the motor mounts it will sag down towards the transmission. Support/raise the back of the motor. It should help.

If this is an automatic trans... is the crank hub "register" bore size correct for the transmission / converter hub?

Do you have both trans mount and engine mounts attached to engine and trans?
If so you need to undo at least the trans mount so you can seperate the two before you try to get the trans back and rotated to fit engine correctly.

Thank you guys for all the help. I FINALLY got it. Took about 2 hours of yanking and cursing and busting knuckles and bashing head lol. I swear I hit my head a dozen times on the carburetor and the rocker arms.

I do have another question though. I got all the bolts in place I think around the bell housing but the one that also holds the transmission dipstick. I can not seem to find the right bolt. Anyone know what the correct bolt is for it? Also Can I use the starter to turn the engine so I can get the last 2 flexplate bolts in or should I go back to manually turning the engine?

It shoud be the same size as the one above the starter, I would not use starter to rotate engine. However I have a bolt in the harmonic balancer.

I also have one of those bolts. I just wasn't looking forward to crawling under the car and then out again to turn the motor a little further and back and forth but I will do what I have to.

Just wanna comment. It is crazy how easy it is to get things out and how hard it is to get it back in. I think I got everything out in like 4 hours I am pushing 10 hours now and I am still not done.

So far:

Engine is (motor mounts still loose)
Pre-installed
Oil pump
Fuel pump
Intake/Exhaust Manifold
Carb
Motor Mounts
Water Pump
Distributor
Starter
Power Steering Pump and hoses connected
Heater hoses
Exhaust pipe connected
Spark Plugs

Left:
Radiator
Fan
Connect trans lines
Ignition Coil
New Spark Plug Wires
Valve Cover

Anything not on my lists? Sometimes there is a lot and I don't want to forget anything.
