hey guys, first time slant 6 owner and im at my wit's end.

i found a 1982 d150 sitting in an old lady's yard. the truck has been sitting for over 5 years without being started. I got the truck for a couple hundred bucks thinking it would be a fun quick project. i have since installed new new battery,plugs, air filter, fuel filter, fuel pump and and took the carb off for a nice cleaning. the truck now starts but only if i play with the gas. too much gas or too little and it will stall. will backfire sometime on start up and smells rich WHEN i can actually get it running for a min. This is my first carb vehicle so everything i an experiment right now just figuring it out. i believe the people that have tried messing with the truck to see if they can get it started before buying did not put the throttle linkage back the way it needs to be. can anyone post pics of what the stock linkage is supposed to look like? any help would be great.

Welcome to the slant kingdom. Lets cover some things to better help ya.
Is it a one or two bbl carb?
Is it a Holley, carter bbd, etc? What type of carb?
Upon rebuild did you set floats?
How did you set idle mixture screw or screws?
If its carter bbd, how did you set the metering rods?

These should get a good start for someone like DI who will be along shortly and have a plethora of information. Ill prime this thread and I'm sure he will be here to fine tune it.

I'd be looking at the float first of all, assuming you've already tried adjusting the mixture and idle screws.

Could you explain what you did exactly when you "cleaned" your carb. Something that's been sitting for years will quite a bit of TLC (& some harsh chemicals with a compressed air chaser) to get working correctly. My first couple carb "rebuilds" were resounding failures- & I learned that spray carb cleaner will eat the varnish off my desk :lol: .

Someone should have a link for a "good" carb rebuild kit & float.

first of all let me apologize to everyone and admit that i am in over my head just by the questions being asked. Again this is my first carb vehicle and is a whole new world for me.. but hang in there, im learning.

i have no idea what carb brand i have. Im looking at it and it has no writing. all i can tell is it's a one bbl carb. Im trying to post pics but its not coming through. Where is the brand on the carb?

As far as my "rebuild" i'm afraid it was more of a "cleaning." honestly i looked at it as a human heart in my hand with a bunch of ports, valves and veins... so i did the logical thing when unsure, i hit everything with carb cleaner :| sorry for the amateur move but for what its worth that was the first time the truck stared after i did that.

as stated by wagonsRcool can somebody post a link for a proper rebuild? i did not mess with any screws or adjustments. I still stand firm that the carb/ throttle linkage is not on properly. Can i email somebody photo's of what i have so they can post them? i figured you guys will know more by looking at it than me trying to sound like i know what im talking about.

rebuild kit from an auto parts store ok?

From what i can tell...it's a version of holley 1945 but let other people confirm this. I'm not sure how many versions of 1945 are out there or how they differ.

I bought an 84' d150 last november and it took me a good 4 or 5 months before i could even try and start it...just be patient and use the forum to help you work thru some of the problems and give it some time too develop

I was new to carbureted vehicles myself and at 1st it was a little overwhelming but i bought the oem, haynes, chilton service manuals (which i suggest...if you plan on keeping the truck for a while) and after giving myself the last 7 months of working with the truck and learning about it, i'm a lot more comfortable and i'm putting together a descent running truck

With the problem your having it's probably a combination of things ignition, carburation, fuel line, possible exhaust restriction, and it will take time and understanding to work thru them...

After i got the carburetor, ignition, fuel line and some of the other things worked out on my truck...it ended up that the catalytic converter was the original one and was deteriated on the inside and caused an exhaust restriction. I played around for months with the carb, and ignition and then joined this forum and it was suggested to remove the cat and that for me fixed a lot of the problems i was having...

That is a Holley 1945. It is clear that someone has bent the choke thermostat rod pretty severely. The problems you describe could be caused by a malfunctioning choke.

The first thing you should do is purchase the three books discussed HERE. The second thing you should do is read them until you are more familiar with what you are doing.

You should also drain the gas tank and try running the truck with fresh gas. Gasoline that sits eventually turns into varnish. You may have to go so far as to remove the gas tank and clean it out.

Hi angryminnow.
Welcome to the forum. You said that the truck has been sitting for at least 5 years whitout being started. Unfortunately, the fuel in the tank will age at the speed relative to dog years! I suggest you flush the fuel line back into the tank, drain the fuel tank, and fill it up with fresh new carbfood.
Also remember that old rubber fuel lines may deteriorate because of the additions made to today's fuel.

I also recommend that you look in the FAQ in the Engine section. There you'll find a lot of links to relevant info, including carburtor manuals.

Yes it is a 1945 as pointed out, looks like a mini octopus to me, mine was missing most lines etc. so even like kx said, take your time and don't get in a hurry. Small things sorted one at a time, the pyramids are made of blocks not one big one.

As others said I'd look at new clean fuel, maybe a small 1gal can for it to suck from. Choke arms bent, I'd make sure none of the vacuum hoses is split and cracked, and typical small stuff that you would normally do for tune up like plugs I'd at least look at. But carb first as like you said it's kind of the heart.

So keep at it and keep us posted, you'll get there. Look under the edge of the hood, driver side for white vin code stickers, should tell you more like rear axle ratio etc. good luck.
