Post subject:  weird cold start issue

Has anyone had experience with this? On the first start of the day, I press the gas to start. It starts right up, then dies. I have to do this 3 times and then it will run.

I have the electric choke conversion and it's functioning. Choke closes most of the way, then opens as it warms up.

Fast idle on 2nd step of the cam is 1600rpm.

Im running a 225 with super six. Carter BBD from a 318 with the proper fabbed piece for the linkage to attach properly. Don't think I have any vacuum leaks, but haven't tested this. It Idles smooth when warmed up at 750rpm. HEI setup through a fused relay from alternator stud.

Think that's about all the relevant info I can think of. The weather here isn't exactly cold either. 70F in the morning.

It sounds like the choke is set too lean.

That's what I originally thought. I adjusted the choke so that it would close more, ABC it did the same thing. When it finally did start up like before, it sounded bad. I manually opened the choke a bit and it steadied out. Im wondering if maybe the choke needs to go the other way and be opened a bit more.

I had a similar prob with a BBD, what my issue turned out to be was fuel evaporating out of the float bowl when parked for a few days. The pump shot still seems to hold a little fuel for an initial shot to fire the engine but with an empty float bowl it will die quickly. By the time you do the crank, start, die routine a couple of times the mechanical pump has had a chance to fill the float bowl and run normally. In an effort to remedy it I tried the fuel line mod to no avail, but I then mounted the filter over the valve cover, at a higher level than the float valve inlet on the carb. What this did was to supply a reservoir of fuel to gravity feed into the carb and keep the bowl full as fuel evaporates. I can now leave the cay 2 weeks between starts without hassle. The other options are an electric pump, manually filling the carb via the vent tube or just cranking it over. Good luck with your prob, I hope this info helps!
