Hello, new guy here and to the slant 6. My family has a sawmill powered by a 225 and we are in need of the timing "placard". I don't know what it looks like but am told it bolts to the crankcase cover. If anyone has a spare that they are willing to part with or at least a picture of one, it would be appreciate. Tomorrow I will be taking pics of the mill and post them if possible. Thanks |

I gotta see pictures of this! That will be one of the best industrial applications I've seen (next to water pump, and generator). I'll suspect that your slant is a mid-early 60's version that had the bolt on timing tab. Hopefully someone has a spare that they can offer. Pictures will help lots. -D.Idiot |

Please post pictures! This has to be the most unique and interesting application for a slant six I have ever heard of. Combines, airport tugs, water pumps, stationary generators, welders, boats, and parade floats I have heard of and seen pictures of, but never a sawmill! DI is right- we need pictures. Are you looking for the timing tab that bolts to the front of the timing chain cover or some other timing indicator that mounts elsewhere? |

Ok, I think I need the bolt on tab that bolts onto the timing chain cover. I really don't know what I'm looking for, as I'm being told by my FIL what it looks like. The only way we can time it is by ear but that's not good enough for us. That's good enough for grandpa though. The motor has to run at 2800 RPM to give us 820 RPM at the saw. When we get it to RPM, the motor starts popping, spitting and sputtering. We are in Port Orchard, WA. I've got a question, how do I know what year the motor is? |

For the year, typically there's a small cast tab with stamped numbers on the machined top side, located on the forward right side of the block deck. It'll be sticking out from under the head, and may need to be cleaned off to read. On some industrial engines it was blank, but this is more likely a pirated car or PU engine. There're other ways to locate & note timing that can be done in the field without too much hassle. Anyone close enough to Port Orchard to lend'em a hand? |

No pictures today, my camera was dead. Actually I got two pics of some numbers that where on the drivers side of the block, then I looked for a VIN in the place that old6rodder suggested but came up empty handed. Im wondering if this is on a milled surface or a tab that is sticking out? Is it hidden by a mount for the alternator? I looked under the #1 plug(closest to the fan) on the block and nothing. Theres not even a milled deck. Anybody willing to come and help us out?, We are only 10 North of Purdy. Curious about the vacuum advance too. |

Very cool! Don't forget Vermeer Put slants in wood chippers as well. Matter of fact, I have more hours behind a slant powered chipper than behind the wheel.  Guess I'm a poser.

D. Idiot, that helps a lot, thanks. Will be out there tomorrow and take more than two pics for the masses to see the mill. We just got the saws back today too so you will get the full effect of how it works. I'm still looking for that timing tab too!!! |

Wvenable, I've done a lot of work behind a chipper too but the drum style in the video. Mostly behind a Morbark flywheel with 12" infeed and hydraulic rollers. Yours looks dangerous!!! Well they all are....... Reminds me of the movie "Fargo" |

After a visual of where the motor VIN was, I found it. Now I need help deciphering it. The VIN is B 225 6 07. The motor has 3 freeze plugs too. There are cast in numbers on the drivers side too and they are, 04296:and under that another set of numbers that are 2463430-19. The tranny had some cast in numbers too and they 871-3 and under the 3 is a C. What do these numbers mean and more importantly, what year is the motor? 04296: 2463430-19 871-3 C This is how they looked on the motor and tranny. |
