Would I have to change the long tailshaft/housing on my 727 (from a van) to the shorter passenger car shaft/housing for use in a car? Or just chop the driveshaft?

You can probably get away with just a shorter driveshaft, although the rear mount point might also be different. I would recommend staying with the 904 if at all possible - plenty durable and much lighter.

I can definitely tell the weight difference with the ol' bicep test, but does anyone have any rough idea of the weight difference?

I've never noticed a shorter 727 tailshaft for cars. The ones I've seen are the same as 2WD trucks and vans. There is a short 727 tailshaft that was used on some older 4WD trucks. I had a '74 Powerwagon that used a short tailshaft and a short driveshaft to the transfer case. That was the last year for it's use in 1/2 ton Powerwagons, '75 used a full time 4WD with the tailshaft bolting to the transfer case. I think that's a different tialshaft than the '74 used.

Ok, because I saw the tailhousing from my 727 and compared it to one from a 904, and I was like

The A-bodies with 727 trannies did not have a shorter tail shaft to match the length of the 904 or manual trannies. They just used a shorter drive shaft.

FWIW, I am using the long tailshaft A833OD 4spd tranny in my 68 Barracuda. A shorter drive shaft and a little fabing for the shifter mount, otherwise it was a straight bolt in.

Another tail-ish question...

Could you take a 4-wheel 727 and put the longer tailshaft, along with the tailhousing, and have a passenger car 727? I'm not too familiar with the t-case mounting, I don't know if it's the same pattern as the regular housing.

It's the same, that is, the adapter that goes between the 727 and the tcase bolts in place of the 2wd housing. In other words, you can use a 2wd housing in place of the 4wd tcase adapter.

Didn't vans have short tailshafts?

Don't think so, the one I have isn't.
