This looks like a job for a factory service manual. |

Well I got the service manual and it has next to nothing about the air pump and its plumbing. Matter of fact it's the only thing on the whole van not covered. |

Look at the very back in the emissions section. It is there. You could also look at the sticker on the bottom of your hood. |

all that is shown is the diverter valve and nothing else both in the manual and under the hood Could it be that there is no air injection into the engine and the only air line goes to the capped bung on the exhaust? |

Yes. It is possible that in 79 you only had air injection either directly into the catalytic converter or into the exhaust pipe. Go by what your service manual and sticker say. Does your head have the port to the rear of the #6 exhaust manifold? If so, is it capped? |

It has the port but it is capped and looks like it has always been that way from looking at the paint and bolt head. There is nothing about the air pump on the sticker or in the manual. In the emissions section it stops at the diverter valve and in the exhaust part it stops between the cat and the engine. |

OK. If I am remembering correctly, the diverter valve sits on top of the air pump and directs flow to one of two places. The places could have been the port on the back of the head, the bung in the exhaust pipe directly below the exhaust manifold flange, the catalytic converter directly below the exhaust manifold, or the catalytic converter farther back in the exhaust line. I will go through my service manuals and see if I can come up with a diagram close to what you need............... OK. The oldest manual I have is for an 83 van, so all of this info is coming rom the 1983 factory service manual. It is possible that what you have is not a diverter or switching valve, but a relief valve. The relief valve bolts to the air pump and looks very similar to a diverter valve or switching valve but it only has an output to the bung in the exhaust pipe directly below the exhaust manifold flange. According to the 1983 FSM: "The purpose of the relief valve is to control the pressure within the system, by diverting excessive pump output at higher engine speeds to the atmosphere through silencer material in the relief valve." In 1983 the switching valve was only used on California emissions packages. There was also a combination switching/relief valve, presumably also used only on California emissions packages. I can post pictures of my shop manual (sorry, my scanner is a PITA to use) if you would like to see them. Can you post a picture of your air pump including the valve as well as the emissions sticker under your hood? Even if your van was a California model, I doubt it would have a switching or diverter valve on the air pump in 79. I am fairly confident that what you have is a relief valve that has no external vacuum control on it. |
