Post subject:  Slant Six Trans. adapter

Lou, do you have any pictures of the factory slant six to small block adapter and flywheel spacer? If I can't find a factory unit I will make my own. I'm just curious if you have to use the low starter mount with the factory adapter or the high mount. My cousin has a 66 D400 truck with what appears to be a universal bellhousing with bolt patterns for both slant 6, small block and big block. I've never seen one like that before. The truck is still in use so I can't take it apart. Please share if you can.

Thanks,

Joel

Hey Joel,

I do have some pics that I need to scan in, then I can post/email them. I know that Tim Keith has one of these plates out of a truck that you might be able to get duplicated. Also, Andy Finkbeiner said he could probably locate the holes from mine and make aluminum plates. The starter ends up in the low position. Someone else in S. CA just got ahold of one too, but I don't remember who.

Talk to you soon,

Lou

Joel, I'm working on obtaining one as we speak here. If it materializes I'll send it your way to make a copy of.

This would be pretty easy to lay-out, once we have the print we could CNC program it of just post the specs.
I would think that a thinner plate (1/4 or 3/8 thick) would be a good thing.
Don't forget about the crank / flexplate / flywheel spacer that needs to go with this adaptor plate.

That would be cool to post the specs/CNC program. I think 5/16"-3/8" steel or 1/2" aluminum would work well.

I thought their was someone else already working on some of these plates? Can't remember who. But if the price is right , I would be interested in one, possibly two. If someone has the ability to do a run of these on machine it would certainly be better than each of us making our own under the shade tree.

Thanks for the help. I just got a brand new A518 trans. that I don't plan on using in my valiant, but would like to trade for a well rebuilt A500 Auto. I should check with Brent Laney since he has a trans. shop. to see if he would trade. If anyone can get a CAD drawing of the adapter I have a freind with a CNC laser cutting machine and could cut the adapter out of any thickness steel plate.

I think that Tim Keith down in Texas posted a couple months ago that he got a plate. The guy that I'm trying to deal with refuses to acknowledge whether he actually has one or not now.

I got one of these plates at John's Salvage in Seguin, Texas out of an A-100 van.
It is cast iron and heavy, over 1 inch thick. I think you could make one from thinner
steel plate. Moving the transmission forward even a little might help clearance with
the floorpan. The plate cost $40.00. Be sure to get the spacer disk that fits over
the end of the crankshaft.

I haven't been able to find an A-500 to go with it.

Are you talking about the truck bell housing that bolts a 3spd like a np735 or a 4 spd like a np435 to the slant 6 or a small block. The 80# or so cast iron one that puts the starter down low ? with a hydro clutch? If so I got one out in the garage on the floor :D . I could take pictures of it and post them if someone was interested I could measure it when time allows, maybe this weekend. I don't know about this "flywheel spacer" the one I have out had a np435 behind it in a 64 dodge pu with a 225 slant. I think the bell housing is original to the truck (though the trans is not it was a np735 3spd) it looks identical to the one I have between a 225 and a 735 that I haven't taken apart yet. The 435 dose have a really long input shaft a foot maybe. if I can help out with some pics or something let me know.

To catch Phil up to speed....

Mopar didn't have a /6 A-727 automatic to bolt into trucks in the early 60's, the closest casing was the 'A' block 318 bolt pattern, so they made an adapter plate that fits between the back of the slant six and the front of the 274,318,340,360,3.9M,5.2M,5.9M bellhousing....with this hard to find plate, one could bolt up an A-500 Dakota AOD automatic behind your slant and take advantage of the OD gearing without having to swap over to one of the later OD manual trannies....

Besides the adapter, there is a 'spacer' that goes between the crankhub and the flywheel/flex plate to make sure everything fits right...

Keep an eye out in your junkyards.

FYI, my factory cast iron spacer is not that heavy - only 23 lbs with the crank spacer ring. The biggest problem with it is that it's 1 1/8" thick, so it would be nicer to only space the trans back 3/8-1/2" or so.

I will likely pull the A500 out of the '68 sometime this year to finish up some trans tunnel mods I cut corners on before, so I could send the plate off to be duplicated then. I make no promises on timing though... So far the car has about 20k on it with the A500 and no troubles yet. :)

I have a 727 out of a 383 car is there any plate to bolt it up to my slant ?
what I want to do is tub my cuda with a 8 3/4 and have the trans rebuilt . I was hoping there is a plate so I can leave the slant in wile I build my engine. Its going to take me a couple of years.

Post subject:  slant 6 727

Hey, DI... Yes, they did make a 727 that bolts up directly to a slant... there is one in a yard near my house as we speak, a de bodied Dodge truck frame that still has the slant and 727 intact. This one is a normal tail length 727 but I have seen short tail slant 727's, had a friend who had an NOS one about 5 years ago and gutted it, scrapped the case and swapped the guts into a smallblock short tail 727. BTW: Did you ever get out to that boneyard by you to check on that Volare 4 speed hump?
