You'll actually see about a 50-50 split. There really is no major advantage/drawback to either.

which is lighter

is there an advantage to the early head for accessing the lifters through the drool tube area?

You can get to the lifters with a drool tube head on. Not with a Peanut.

If you deck the block over 0.100" access to the lifters becomes more difficult. At 0.125" it's pretty tough, but still can be done. Beyond that, I don't know. The angle to get at them becomes a bit of a pain.

The late hydraulic head has bores just big enough to get lifters out if you are careful.

The later heads have a touch more meat in them for porting.

The early tube style heads are lighter. That is my main reason for using one. Well I had it laying about as well

I Believe there is a wider range of spark plug selection with the gasket type plugs vs. non gasket plugs for our applications.

When I spoke to Mike about my new head, I had a list of heads I could send him to use. One was a 79 peanut plug and one was a 67-74 drool tube"169" head. I had heard that Mike may like the later heads and thought he may want that one. But I'm pretty sure he said he has kind of changed his mind about that a little because some of the later heads had too much core shift in the ports. So he asked me to send the earlier drool tube head. Just a FYI.

we took a bunch of heads to a porter in Newport News. He really liked the chamber shape on the peanut nut. The wall across from the valves looked like a better shape to him. He did a quick flow on my old head with 1.88 and 1.50 valves and liked what he saw. He thought the peanut with the bigger valves would be a good chamber for burn. I am thinking a sawzall on a peanut head will take a ton of weight out and allow lifter removal.

I love the peanut head......it will move over to my wifes new engine for her car, see how a big valve head likes the street. :D
