Hey guys,
Just looking for a bit of input, or some confirmation on what I'm thinking the issue is.
On my 1984 engine, I'm having trouble getting up to speed. I'll hit around 80-90km/h with my foot to the floor and have no where to go from there.
I haven't had the truck with me for about a month as I am off at school and I had to leave it at home. When I was driving it before, the alternator was going out (read: not charging at all). Is it possible that I was just getting a terrible spark as it was feeding off the discharging battery and this was causing my total lack of power?

Any other thoughts on what it could be? Maybe just very low compression on the newer engines? Not too sure.

What ignition system and carburetor do you have on it?

I have driven my car in low voltage situations when the alternator brushes had worn down to the springs. With only 3 or 4 volts the engine is pretty gutless. I drove home that way for almost 20 miles. When it quit running I would have to stop and let the Optima battery rebound then drive another 5 miles.....not fun. Get the alternator rebuilt (new brushes and or diodes if it needs them) so you have a good charge and sort it out from there.

The ignition system is whatever comes stock on a 1980 slant. The wiring and dist are all from my original engine. Mopar electronic I guess? The carb is a BBD that I rebuilt and was running well on my old engine.
I figure the problem likely was from the alt. I drove mine about 100km going 40/h down the highway since eventually that was all the truck could do.

Before you spend on parts, you can save time and money by finding the problem.
A compression test and alternator test will help sort out what is happening.

Do the checks first before you invest on a new or rebuilt alternator.

I know the alt is bad, it's been tested. Compression was around 130 last I checked if I remember right.

Is the cat still in the truck? A plugged cat acts like this.

verify that the throttle plates are fully open when the foot feed is pushed to the floor.

No cat. The truck is actually an 80 with an 84 engine and didnt come with one. Brand new exhaust all the way back also.

Check filters as well as fuel pressure... A clogged air or fuel filter will rob gobbs of power. Especially under high speed/ high load situations. Being that it is electronic ignition you could be suffering greatly from a lack of juice to the system... Doesnt usually take much to make something move under light loads, but highway speeds or climbing hills are another story. Double check timing as well just to make sure its where it should be...
