| Post subject: | Carter BBD Choke Valve Stuck Open |
Hey guys i installed an electric choke assist like this one
i have it connected to the fusebox and it seems to open up when it needs too yet it gets stuck on WOT even when its cold, if i use to much tension the valve does not let air in and i have the hardest time starting the car..what am i doing wrong? |

The choke valve should be held LIGHTLY closed when the engine is cold. As soon as the key is turned on electricity should flow to the electric choke thermostat unit you have installed and the choke thermostat should slowly open the choke late. Eventually the choke plate should be held fully open by the choke thermostat. At the same time, as soon as the engine is started the vacuum operated choke pulloff should pull the choke valve open ROUGHLY 1/4 inch. If the vacuum operated choke pulloff is misadjusted it can pull the choke completely open and hold it there, defeating the electric choke thermostat. Also, it appears that you are running a two barrel carb. Are you certain that the carb is either a slant six specific Holley 2280 or Carter BBD, or a v-8 version of either carb with the proper slant choke linkage or the V-8 carb choke linkage adapter? |

Was the Volare a slant six or a 318 engine? You may need to bend the mount for the electric choke thermostat as well. I installed one on my brother's 1983 Dodge van and I had to press the black coil cover part down slightly towards the manifold to get absolute freedom of movement in the linkage. |
its a carter bbd from a 77 volare..the main issue is from cold start up after being driven the night before..i wake up and the valve is completely open i just tap it with my finger and it goes shut again.
I’m trying to be sure what you are describing by; “i wake up and the valve is completely openâ€. Are you describing the large butterfly choke flapper that should close snugly during a cold start (overnight cool down)? If so, did you follow correct cold start procedure to set automatic choke before engaging starter? That procedure would be to depress accelerator half way to floor, release and depress a ¼ to ½ inch, than engage starter. Butter fly should snap closed with authority, but not so tightly that vacuum pod can’t crack it open ¼ inch or so once engine starts. Next cold start, open hood, remove air cleaner, rotate throttle half way open by hand and observe closing action of choke by hand. To reset choke back to pre-start condition (fully open) open throttle by hand enough to free choke butterfly and while holding butterfly open, release throttle. Choke should stay full open. I would repeat this hand set and reset operation a few times until your eye catches all that takes place with linkage and bimetal spring, high idle cam relation etc. to set choke. After you understand what takes place, make any adjustments to be sure nothing is binding, or not fully closing, or closing too tight. Many moons ago I had a high mileage two barrel carb on a 273 in my first Dart. It developed a nasty habit of choke butterfly linkage binding up disallowing fully closing only when humidity was high or raining. I had to remove the little linkage rods and using a small fine file dress the worn spots smooth where rods were connected. This stopped all binding, and cussing. |

I installed one on my engine and the coil was installed backwards. Sounds like the problem you have. Verify that it gets tighter when cold and looser when warm. If it does not, take the black plastic cover off, uncrimp the center terminal and flip the coil spring around. It should work fine then. |
