Can someone please point me in the right direction in finding a reverse manual valve body for a 904 and the associated modifications required to install one? Thanks! Rob |

Isn't it great how the Slant 6 world keeps friends in touch? Charlie and I have been friends from way back when I got my first Slant 6 Dart in 1990. |

As I'm pondering this modification I wonder if anyone knows if you can modify the original valve body to make it manual. Or is the manual valve body a completely different beast? Also, why does it have to be reversed, or does it? I have only seen one manual valve body years ago when Charlie Thompson bought it at a swap meet. I hardly even knew what one was then. I'm not too much further along now, obviously. I rebuilt my A-904 and put in a shift kit with the help of a knowledgeable friend, but I haven't started the new engine yet to see if I did it right. Any help or guidance is appreciated. 34 days 'til Bristol. Uh oh! Rob |

Direct Connection used to offer manual valve body kits, but that was a while back. The instructions for the conversion was in the older 'Chassis Manual' but I don't know if it's still in the newer editions. I think there is a Trans-Go kit (TF-3) that will convert stock body to manual. The reason it is reversed is to upshift manually away from reverse and park. It's a old safety feature left over from the days were there was no neutral lock out. The original 1967 factory Super Stock cars came with reverse valve bodies from the factory. The gear indicator read: PRN12D instead of the normal PRND21. Cecil |

I usde to use B&M Manual Paks all the time. It converted a stock VB to forward pattern, full manual. I looked for one before I bought my first Cheetah. Those kits used to be about $49 and now they are about $5 less than a Cheetah. |

Dennis, How does that Cheetah do on downshifts? Is it pretty hard/stable for those too - no slippage? I am considering starting out with a 904 in my next project car, and want a manual VB for sure. I remember my bro had one of those B&M kits in his 318 Dart and it had hard upshifts, but the 3-2 downshift was really slippery. Thankya! Lou |

Lou, I have a Cheetah VB in my 66 Cuda. I don't ever down shift mine at closed throttle, above the converter stall speed, and wait till i'm stopped before shifting to fisrt, unless i'm applying power. It just bangs to hard. |

Thanks Charlie. I am mainly interested in WOT downshifts on the road course and am concerned about it hurting the trans since that valve body may only be set up for good upshifts. Sounds like maybe it's OK from what you've said, as long as I don't downshift at high Rs for engine braking (which I shouldn't do anyway). Lou |

Lou, you should be ok, even using it for engine braking down shifts. I just don't do it on the street, because I had the 7 1/4 rear, and people would look at me like i couldn't drive. If your going to be at Bristol, you can try mine there. Hopefully I'll have the car done. |

Lou, you should be safe with a 3-2 downshift, but I wouldn't advise a 2-1. A Cheetah does not apply the low band and you could roll the sprag on a full throttle downshift to low. |
