In September the #172 (#72) Valiant had a loss of oil pressure after about 8 hours of run time at Thunderhill racetrack in the 24 hours of Lemons race. Not sure how many laps it did with low oil pressure, but we had some rod knocking afterward. We changed out the oil pump and went back out for a few laps, but the bearings were getting hot and block temp climbing.

We put a block temp gauge (electric), and a head Temp gauge (electric in stock location) to monitor the head mostly, but to compare the two since we have overheated in all of the 3 previous races.

The oil pump gear was still attached but the teeth were worn down in a couple places, like the pump was stalled and the cam gear chewed through the aluminum gear on the pump.

We run 8-9 quarts of oil and a 3 quart Acusump connected to the normal oil pressure switch output with 3/4 or 1/2" NPT pipe and a Tee. The Acusump is straight through, the oil pressure switch is on the tee.

I think the oil pump had either blockage problems or low oil flow into the gear interface, but that's a guess. This track has a couple turns that connect into a long left (twice), that could have pushed all the oil right, which is why we have the acususmp.

anybody every tried to get more oil flow into the pump gear/cam area? or to the main bearings? Thanks

Check with Doc for one of his blueprinted oil pumps and hardened gear set. Doc also has some good tech info on oil passage mods in one of his build threads. Try a search for oil mods.

Hello,

Sounds Like a fun interesting Track car you have there.

What cam were you running and What oil pump Gear?

What weight of oil?

What PSI? / max RPM?

It seems like you are doing things right with the accusump and the 8-9 Quarts.

Did you have a stock pan? any Baffling added?

Any Pan Mods? any Oil Pan Kickouts Added? Most slant racers Run a slightly to heavily Modified oil pan to keep the oil down in there.

I am no road racer, but I do have a Drag car that Has recently suffered a similar failure. I have a Heavilly Modded and Baffled pan with Trap Doors that I built for just Draggin.. I run 8 Quarts in my system. I have never uncovered the Pickup yet.

read up on the Slant six Oil Pump Gear report here:

Good Luck and It's probably time to go to an External Crank Driven Pump.

Greg

Greg, You have a cool car too. You could be a Lemons racer with all those hack mods.
Quote:

Stock cam, stock pump that came in the engine which was the original for the car. Roughly 135K miles on the car.

The engine has been overheating badly in all three previous races (~10 hours of running out of 2day x8hrs). We raced at Buttonwillow, CA in June in 110F temps and boiled over the carb every time we stopped (~1hr). The Rad boiled over a couple times.

Then we got the dual weber downdraft set up 2 x weber DCNV 2x36mm carbs and the car ran cooler, but still had a overheating problem over about 1-2 hours between driver changes. but not as bad as before.

What weight of oil?
10/30W. I've raced a couple different cars and used all sorts of oil. I my limited experience, it about having oil, not what oil. So we run 10/30W
Quote:
What PSI? / max RPM?
when cold the idle is about 20 psi, running is 45-60 if I remember correctly. Once the engine gets hot, idle drops to ~10 and running is 45psi. if the engine was overheating oil pressure at idle could be 0 psi

Max RPm was 4800, but rarely.

Stock Pan. Not baffled yet, as we have not had this engine out of the car. but we will have to now, as the bearings are shot.

Nope. Just the accusump. Side wings or knockouts as you guys call them won;t work with out baffling. In hard cornering all the oil would just go to one side and the engine would starve and for sure kill the bearings. This happened in our Previous car, a Honda Civic with an Acura 1.6L motor. we killed like 7 of those before we put on a baffled pan and BIG 3 quart Acusump.

Greg
Yeah, but thats $ and our budget is limited to ~200-500 per race per the rules. and we still have to pay for the new (used) engine, and manual steering box, and headers, and cam, and maybe not all that stuff. Or its bribe the judges.

I'll be talking to Dr Dutra, he lives near by.
