If the hood is off, then bolt the chain to the two bolt holes in the head near the manifolds. If the hood is staying on the car then I like to put a long chain over the engine and attach one end to the lower alternator mount bolt and the other end to the rearmost engine to transmission brace mounting hole.

Yes. Welcome to the wonderful world of slant six ownership! I find inline sixes much more pleasing to own and work on than any v model engine.

Is your six stock or did you modify it a little.Mine is stock but would like a little more power.Dont have a lot to spend on it but what can I do for a little more power. My plan was to take it out and paint it and put it back but while I have it out now would be the time to upgrade a little. Thanks David

There is a lot of info here about doing just that. Search! Search this forum and find things like the Engine build matrix. Go to the FAQ in each area. Go to the articles section.

If you can read, the info you need is here for you! :D

The front boss balances the motor only, the rear boss balances the motor/trans package..pretty neat! Use a grade 8 fastener threaded all the way in. Its tough pulling the motor using the rear only, the front will raise the motor faster so you can clear the tunnel but then you got the output shaft on the floor and the motor 2 feet up. It gets a little nerve wracking hoisting it over the fender!

If you have a good hoist, have the room, just pull the motor and trans together. Its faster. Get the radiator out, drain all fluids, drop the drive shaft hook up the hoist and pull it out.

Short on head room? Jack rear of car up increasing clearance at fire wall, and allowing greater tail shaft down angle in relation to floor of car.

All good advise, especially draining fluids. Note, youll never get it all out of the trans (espacially auto) so I slice a asparin bottle (or other sized cans) top off and slide it into the driveshaft seal and then duct tape it to the tailshaft. The plugs they sell stick out too far and usually get knocked out when hoisting...ask me :-( Oh yeah, make sure you have enough room in the front (or side) of the car to pull the hoist to clear the motor of the chassis! I was short about a foot once and ended up just pushing the car back.....I actually think that was safer as I didnt have the motor swinging from the hoist being jerked/moved and you end up with PLENTY of room to drop her down onto a $7 HF furniture dolly! (with appropriate blocking to keep her upright as they wont sit up without a kickstand)

Or leave the trans in place and separate the motor from the trans. I have never pulled a motor and trans as a unit. It really isn't that hard to separate the engine from the transmission, especially on an automatic.

we used to do motor only, but this time we did both, and it was really easier. more room to align the bell housing and input shaft... was a dream. only way to go for us now.
good luck, welcome.

Thanks for all the input.I think I will take trans with it.It was always easier in the past.If I take both out will I still just use the two holes in the top of the head for hauling it out or should I have another chain somewhere else due to the extra weight of the trans. Thanks David

I yanked the pair with a lifting tab bolted to the rear bolt only. Tab was a half round 3/8 plate with a chain hook hole.
