Post subject:  different carb setup

Ok, I read all about how uneven carb flow is on standard intakes since #1 and #6 are so long. What if an intake is made with equal length runners to run 3 or 4 carbs? Say you had an engine that can use a 4 barrel at least, would it be better for say 3 or 4 one barrel carbs or 3 two barrel carbs? I want to do something different, but I want it to function too. I also have a question about being cold-blooded after a header is installed. If I wanted to run in winter, what works better - heat devirted from a header pipe somehow or coolant from the radiator? All this is going into a 73 Dart Swinger, but I would also like to duplicate the engine someday for a truck. I haven't started to do a build up yet, but I know I want it carburated and have a header (or two).

Be creative, twisted6 on the inliner's board has a 3 4v sheet metal tunnel ram on his 250 chevy. Offy makes a dual 1v manifold. ProLineFuel uses this manifold and a set of webers for a versital setup. Clifford Performance has a triple weber side draft manifold for the 45 DCOE. There is an occasional multi carb manifolds out of australia with interesting carb choices that show up on ebay. There is a guy on the .com site selling a home built tri-power setup ( 3 1v's with progessive outer carbs).

Being creative is what I'm shooting for with this. I'm planning on casting an aluminum intake manifold. I want to design something unique.

I designed a "Tri Power" SL6 set-up years back, never produced it.
This had 3 stock one bbl carbs arranged to run off the center carb. for light loads, then pull-in the outer 2 carbs when needed. Basically a "3-Pak" with progressive linkage.
If you keep the carb mounting pads large, no reason why you could not install 3 - 2 bbls for a true "six-pak" set-up.

How about an EFI setup with a plenum from a 6 cylinder BMW and custom cast runners to attach it to the slant six? That could almost look factory, and would definitely raise a lot of eyebrows.

The three Weber (or Mikuni, or SU) setup is one that is likely to give a great mix of performance and drivability.

I could see a "tri-power" setup working, but I'd have to wonder if the fuel distribution would be screwy when only driving around on the center carb.

If anyone is interested, there's a guy trying to sell a home-made set-up that is just like the one Doc described over on www.slantsix.com in the "Parts for Sale" section. He wants $500 for the intake, 3 new Holley rebuilt carbs, and progressive linkage.

That sounds like something interesting. Being hand crafted, I'd be curious as to looks, but sounds a bit heavy.

It is heavy!!

he said something like 50lbs alone for the intake to me

as for looks, it really does look pretty good, but it is an untested design, and i think for 500bux it may be better off to buy a intake and through a couple carbs on.

So you've seen it, did he email you a pic? If so, do you still have a copy?

I have imagined using 3 Holley 5200 progressives on an equal-length tubing manifold, each feeding 2 cylinders firing 360 degrees apart; i.e., 1/6, 2/5, 3/4. Basically, three separate manifolds. Seems like that setup would give great distribution, power, and maybe fuel milage. Would require a lot of linkage fabbing and tuning, though.

I'm trying to picture that in my head. Are you saying that all the ports would be equal lengths? If you are, the mental picture I'm getting is interesting. i'm thinking 1,6 to center. then 2,5 to center but closer to ds fender. then 3,4 to center and closer yet to the ds fender. I don't know if it would be better, but if that's the lines you're thinking, then might be something to try. The piping and throttle linkage might be fun to figure out though.

Dave M did this years ago on his Valiant wagon (3 X 350 cfm Holley 2-bbls on a custom fabbed sheetmetal intake): 12.81 @ 104.53 mph.

Maybe he'll spot this thread and drop a comment? But be forewarned: 6 passes and back to start each pass (approx. 3 miles) ate 4-1/2 gallons of feul, according to him...the old performance / mileage trade-off...

Hey, but that's only at WOT. :o My Dart gets around 3-4 MPG going around a road course at WOT for about 1/2 the time and 3500-6000 RPM, but it gets 24 MPG on the hwy at steady 75 MPH. 8)

Happy dreaming and building, :)
