i continued under the "904 filter" topic i had started many days before but will poise new question here, 65 dart /6 console 904, piecing the sucker back together from the dead. put in donor engine and trans that came out of the 65. checked got 2 hole filter, all gears move except no reserse. pulled pan, cable moves all gears so i figure thats workin o k. yes i have fsm. read how to adjust rear band, but if i did that,, the screw would be about all the way in.
my question. wher e does the big lever need to be when i adjusst the screw, should lever be all the way up and adjust till the band comes snug against drum ???? or could there be another problem except it needs adjsuting??? i would like to button it back up in a m before it snows, its home is open shed!
yep i/m no tranny mechanic or rocket scientist! LO thanks for any help.

Loosen the locknut, and Tighten the screw to 41 inch lbs (good and snug), then back off the adjustment, 7 turns and then tighten the lock nut.

Edit: adjustment on the 65 trans should be 72 inch lbs, and back off 3 1/4 turns.
I had looked up a later trans.

i will give it a try again this a m,, but one question i habe is what is the relation with the big lever and what i guess is the servo ( servo is the cup or piston lookin thing?????, there was a lot of movement with the lever, like i said i turned the srew WAY in and it moved very freely and didn't exactly snug down that i oculd tell. ???? thanks for any advice.

The other end of the lever should have a "strut" between the lever and the band. If the strut is missing, the lever will not tighten the band. These struts have been know to fall out if the adjustment is too loose. The strut is just a small piece of metal about 1-1.5 inches square, and about 1/8 inch thick.
It is possible the band is broken, but more likely the strut fell out. If you move the lever, by hand, does it move the band?

See my edit on the band adjustement.

the plate is there, i can move the lever to put pressure on the band and move it. my in lb torque wrnech came over beforre the Tatannic. perhaps i should just try to get the crew up snug and back it off. like you say, there are quite possibly more problems. this old car had been sittin how long??? when my buddy found it, and now he can't remember what he just had for breakfast! saD BUT TRUE. my garage is open shed on 2 sides and its starting to blow and snow. i need to get it buttoned up, thanks

If I remember correctly, the servo pushes the band lever down about 1/2" before it fully applies the band. If you can't get the band to fully lock by hand, you likely have some kind of fault with the band itself- worn out, broken-bent anchor ear (the other end of the band from the apply strut)

I usually turn the driveshaft back & forth in neutral while pulling on the lever to see what happens. (you can drop the valve body & "air test" the servo, but that's another story- my 63 had lost reverse years back due to a crack in the valve body itself).
