I first cranekd over engine to circulate fluid. Then hooked up coil lead, and engine started right up and idled well. AT first the fluid was high up on the dip stick. It was at about the the lettering saying to check it when hot and in neutral. I shifted through the gears and was pleased with things. I checked the fluid level on the dip stick and no fluid showed. It apparently had pumped much of it into places where it needed to be.

I started adding fluid a little at a time, checking the level. It did not start this whining until a certain point as I was adding fluid. The dip stick said 1 pint low, so I added fluid, and it started to whine. When I pull it into drive, the whine stops. Sometimes when I put it back into neutral the whine is not there at first, then it starts again. When I check the fluid while idling in neutral, it once again says add a quart. When I do add a pint the whining gets worse. And yet, the dip stick says add one pint still.

Relevant facts:
1. There is no drive shaft, just a slip yoke with a repair tag wired to it so I can hear it slap against the floor pan when it turns. It still turns when it is in neutral. Although, it reverses when in reverse, and I can hear the speed change when I shift into 2nd and 1st.
2. The dip stick came from another trans.
Could the lack of a drive shaft have anything to do with the whine? At this point I do not know if it has too little or too much fluid. I don't know if the whine is a symptom of the wrong fluid level, or a damaged pump.

Any feed back would be appreciated. If I cannot scope this out with your help I may tow it to my trans shop and have them deal with it. I have done the time consuming part of assembling all the custom work, which would have cost a fortune has I farmed it out.

Thanks much. Sam

I just wanted to say I have had several PM's and a phone call on this, and the general sense right now is that there is air in the fluid which will work its way out with some driving. I have a shaft now which is being shortened now. Maybe next week if Winter ever lets up.
